Default Breaking news: Regulus Isn't Round

Regulus, the brightest star in Leo the Lion, isn't round, say astronomers in
the U.S. Instead, its rapid spin flattens the star into the shape of a
pumpkin.

The full story, with a color diagram, is at

Why can't you cross post this rather than multiple posting? (AKA spam)

Not that I care one way or the other, but the FAQ for this newsgroup states:

"Try to avoid cross-posting to multiple newsgroups."

That would be in Section A.5, last bullet point. If this statement is
different from what you are suggesting then the FAQ should be changed to
be a bit more clear.

I think the FAQ does need changing, then. AIUI, cross posting (putting
multiple groups separated by commas) is OK to a degree, because a
well-behaved newsreader will only show the message once. As it is, I
read it here, _and_ in alt.astronomy, _and_ sci.astro. I don't regard it
as a hanging offence, though :-)
Widespread cross posting is frowned on and is usually the mark of a
crank, but Ken's no crank.

"Jonathan Silverlight"

Spam is unsolicited COMMERCIAL email.

He may have fucked up, but he was NOT spamming. He was on-topic.

This really isn't worth pursuing, but a lot of web sites disagree.

"The word "spam" was usually taken to mean excessive multiple posting
(EMP)" (Wikipedia)
"Spam is the name given to EMP (Excessive Multiple Posting)"
"Posting the same or similar message to one or more newsgroups
(excessive cross-posting or multiple-posting, also known as "SPAM")"
"Spam in newsgroups can be either excessive multi-posting or excessive
cross-posting.
Excessive Multi-Posting (EMP) refers to sending the same (or nearly the
same) message, one by one, to multiple newsgroups. Multiple posting is
almost never recommended because (a) multiple messages are better sent
by cross-posting and (b) follow-ups will be posted in different
newsgroups. " (Demon Support)

I've not seen an option in my newsreader to remove cross posting
repeats. I'm using Thunderbird 1.0. As I said it doesn't really make
much difference to me either way as I only read two newsgroups; this one
and the s.a.a group.
<sarcastic rant>
Also, I've been using the Internet since it was invented by Al Gore back
in 1994 :-) and I still haven't figured out all of the acronyms used on
Usenet/e-mail. For instance, what does AIUI mean? Is there a definitive
list somewhere that has all of them defined? It seems like every few
weeks a new one pops up that I haven't seen before. These acronyms
really bug me sometimes. Having worked in the computer industry for
quite some time now I'm used to strange acronyms but do we all really
need to "talk" like that all the time? Soon, our posts will just consist of acronyms! :-)
