Default Origin of Martian oxygen for corrosion?

Which theories has been developed _and_ verified by lab experiments
about the origin of free oxygen in the Martian atmosphere in
ancient times?

I mean, the oxygen which is now bound in iron-oxides on the surface.

The reason for my question is, that I cannot think of any reasonable
explanation except for chlorophyl, as syntheses by UV-light from CO2
for example cannot create sufficient volume concentrations for that
amount of oxydation we see today.
