Books on geology
It all depends on your learning style.
Most textbooks are "pedagogical", that is to divide knowledge into
logically connected chunks, suitable for learning. Nice pictures
and lab projects reinforce this. Press & Siever's "Earth" is good
textbook.
Behind every science there a drama of discovery: colorful personalities,
history, and conflicting ideas. Some people learn things better through
drama than a dry succession of facts. That is where McPhees essays,
Walter Sullivan's Continents in Motion, Naomi's Oreske's biographies, etc.
can contribute.
PBS Nova explores a few geologic topics every season. You can get copies
in libraries or buy them from PBS.
I think all three approaches are useful at times.
