Default In which God Rests on the seventh day

(IN WHICH God rests on the Seventh Day..)

"Please Sir."
What is it Dumnuts?
"Is that true? ...that bit in The Bible, where it says about God
resting on the seventh day?"
("He went to play golf.")
("Lazy B@#$#@!")
(General chorus: "Football/ skydiving/ pub... etc.)
("He couldn't have done because.....")
"Quiet please. Why?"
"Because, ...because I did a search on google, about "plate tectonics"
and "growth of the mantle" and just got two entries - Some loop called
Don Findlay and and somebody else, David Ford.
"Now moderate your language please, ...you're in class, not on the
net."
"Yes, but, ...doesn't the mantle grow?"
"No, the mantle does not grow. That is a common misconception
perpetrated through bad teaching. (Though thankfully not at this
institution.) The mantle moves from A to B and back again, ...from
(remember everyone?)...from where it is coming up..... to where it is
going down, .... in a process called?...."
"Convection Sir!"
"Correct. Convection . We've covered this Dumnuts, I thought you
knew it. Didn't you read the book again as you were asked?"
"Yes I do, ...I did, I just thought..."
Yeah Dumnuts, what did you think? Hey everybody, Dumnuts is thinking
again@!!
"Stinking"
"Not bloody much!"
"Lots, I reckon!"
"Quiet please. So what did you think dumnuts?"
"Well, if the mantle is solid and moves, well, sort of solid, ...and
convects, ..right? but it melts at the ridge, right? How does that
melted bit at the ridge get carried along with the sort of solid
stuff?. Why doesn't it stay behind - where the ridge is making it
melt?"
"It gets rivetted on dummy! God comes along with his pop rivetter and
rivets it."
"He can't, He's resting."
"He doesn't need to. It just runs down the hill because it's melted."
"Well, *then* it gets rivetted."
"Quiet BL. Dumnuts is asking a question. Can anyone answer Dumnuts'
question?
"What's the question, teach?"
"The question is, .... Err, ...the question is:- ..How is the zone of
partial melt at the ridge returned to the mantle. Dumnuts is saying
that because there is convection, the mantle must cycle around from
the ridges to subduction zones and back into the mantle again. It is
a common misconception (are you listening at the back there?), ...it
is a common misconception that the mantle grows. The mantle does not
grow. The mantle is a semi-solid which undergoes convection recycling
by ductile flow , triggered by radiogenic heat in the Earth's
interior."
"I didn't think that was the question at all Teach. ... I though I
was asking why the melted bit stays behind. I mean why it doesn't
stay behind. ....I mean shouldn't it stay behind?"
"Yaah, Dumnuts you're a dork. Everyone knows the mantle convects, and
so it will get carried along and subducted."
"Yeah, Teach says so. So there!"
"And he should know..."
"Because he's the teacher..."
"At this school....."
"Teach., do you teach at any other schools?..."
"Yeah, Dumnuts, ...repeat the question."
"Well I was just wondering how the melted bit gets carried along from
where it's melted."
"It's intruded as dykes."
(silence)
"We did this before at the last school I was at. We used to have
meetings on it every Friday, an' everyone had to know it all, or else.
It's intruded as dykes. In cracks."
"Hey BL, you know all about dykes (heh-heh), is she right?
"PpprrhhHHrp! What would BL know about cracks in dykes?"
"Shut up, ...Big Boy. Yes, it's intruded as dykes."
"So what's it intruded into then, ...DaiISy?"
"Other dykes that have cooled."
"And what were they intruded into? What were the very first dykes
intruded into? An' what school were you at anyhow? I bet your
teacher didn't know more than our teacher."
"I bet he did - Ooops"
"That's enough now. I'm sure you went to a very good school Daisy,
where they taught you all the right things... Well then, perhaps you
can tell us... What substrate *were* the very first dykes intruded
into? "
"Continental margins, Sir, Where the rift broke the continents apart.
That's where dykes would have been intruded. And volcanoes."
"Very good, Daisy. Can you give the class an example?"
"Please Sir, Please Sir, ... Can I?"
"Yes, BL""
"Please Sir, the African Rift Valley! And, ...and, ..and the Indian
traps, and the Tertiary volcanic province of Western Europe.
"Devil's marbles'"
"Bootstraps. Devils bootstraps."
Wrong dummy, ... as usual - it's Doorstep."
"I think you must mean staircase, BL, ... I mean Causeway, the Giant's
Causeway on the north coast of Ireland. That's correct. They are
continental flood basalts, related to, but quite different from the
basalts that extrude the mid-ocean ridges. These were extruded in a
precursor event prior to the opening of the Atlantic."
"And then the ridge, ...and the continents move apart..."
"Well that's why I was wondering that bit about dykes and why they
should move along. I mean, if it's only ....
"C'mon now dykes, move along please..!"
"I told you before, ..shut up, Big Boy!"
"....at the ridge they get intruded, and they keep getting intruded,
then, ...why should they move along at all?
Why don't they just stay there at the ridge getting intruded?"
("WaarRrgh, intruding ridge...!!!)
"That's enough now Beavis."
"Obvious - to make space for other ones. You should use your head
Dumnuts. How can others get intruded if there's no space?"
"Yes, but what space? ...If that one moves along to make space for the
next one, then what's that intruded in to? Space or something?"
(silence)
"Well, it's pushed along then. The new one coming in pushes it
along."
"But that wouldn't work because, ...."
"Yeah, but hang on, hang on, .. hang on, ..."
"Hey who's asking you? Just pipe down and listen. Dumnuts, is
trying to say something."
"...because it has to intrude something to push."
"Yea, well it intrudes the last dyke that was there...."
"Right down the middle..."
"So half gets pushed one way and half gets pushed the other..."
"An' that's why the ocean floors are symmetrical. It's just a great
big half a dyke, mirrored by another great big half-a-dyke."
"So one dyke.."
"Yeah."
"No, *half a dyke"
"Half-a-dyke? One, no two, great big half a ** .... Jeez!"
"Look, ... you ...."
(pause)
"No, a whole lot of dykes, first one way then the other. The new
dyke can get intruded into an old dyke, or between dykes, or even a
fracture."
"Yes, well, ...but if that's the case, ...how would it finally know
which way to go? Wouldn't it be juking about, not knowing? Why
would the ocean floor be symmetrical? "
"Jeez Dumnuts, I can't get over how absolutely absolutely absolutely
dumb you can be. I don't know how many times I have to explain this
to you. Ask Teach."
"Now, BL, what's the problem?"
"Teach, Dumboots wants to know why dykes don't dance."
"PrrphhhHpph".
"...He wants to know why they don't get intruded all over the ridge,
first one side then the other, and why the ocean floor is always
symmetrical. I bet next he'll want to know why they don't get
intruded in transforms!"
"They do get intruded in transforms."
"Yeah? An' how do you know? .... DaI*Sy. Some bloody flower are
you? Thorn more like. How do you know?"
"Now that's enough BL. The ridge determines the symmetry of the ocean
floor. Whilst the newly created ocean floor moves away from the
ridge, it is one of the tenets of convection that the ridge stays in
the same place."
"Yes, but the ridge is made up dykes, which were intruded ...."
"Jeez, ...A whole crop of dykes..!"
"Dancing."
"Cracked dykes dancing, ...Wow!"
"Dykes' cracks dancing. Bow-wow!!!"
"Look, Dumnuts, BL is right. You've been told the answers often. *And
given books to read. These questions have been addressed many times
by very knowledgeable people, and they are all agreed, ..."
"Yeah See! An' they're not agreeing with *YOU*!"
"Yes, ...I know it's supposed to, but why should the ridge stay in the
same place? The outer core is convecting, which is why there's a
magnetic field, and the mantle's convecting, .... which is why there's
plate tectonics, ...and plate tectonics is fixed by a ridge which is
fixed by a source someplace. How can a source stay fixed when all
around is convecting?"
"Because it ***IS*** a source dummy! *That's the reason. (Gor, you
can be so dumb!! There's just no reasoning with you, is there? You
get all this, this, ...this, ..*wisdom*, ... by people writing books
an' years and years of research, ...and you still ask dumb questions!!
It's a source, dork, ...a Heat Source. Got it? " WaarRRghrgha!
Talk about dumb!
"...And why as a line? Why should it be as a line? And why should
it stay as a line as it all comes up?? Why doesn't it sort of 'blurp'
up? "

("Most Geologists believe....")

Ever wonder why that is? It is because you two are the only ones foolish
enough to think that EE is real. The other 16 are either too dumb to know
how to use the internet, to old and codgedy to give a shit anymore, or else
they are dead.

Still, only the True Geology can give those two great & aware Gentlemen,
both the Physics & Engineering explanation of such Phenomena !

Honour here be rendered, to those two devoted souls to the cause of True
Geology indeed !

(Ok BL, ...you're in my movie.) You're the cheerleader for this
conspiratorial PT outfit aren't you? Well, you can naysay all you
like, but it won't work. I'll bet you're an alien. ...I'll bet you
have reptilian skin, ...and 'the eyes', an' those funny pointy ears
that you have to take the scissors to each morning ...I'll bet you
keep your space ship in the dunny, all fuelled up and red-alert ready.

Right. When nothing else comes to mind, play the fool. After all, you are
so good at it.
