(Note that they don't 'inch', or 'millimetre' or 'centimetre' past
each other, but in true objective scientific style they "scrape',
'grind', and 'slide'...)

No doubt about it, the "slide" has it. (Slide? Slide?? Yup,
...it's in the lingo - "plates slide" like ridges "push" and slabs
"pull" (but it's not really a 'push' is it? - it's more a gravity
collapse (the bit that's not a theraml contraction that is ). (And
the "pull" is more an expansion... of the descending slab, ...going
down, getting hotter, .. which is why it gets less dense - and sinks).

" *Slab Pull* - most geologists now believe.... (This is when you can
tell Junk Science coming up a mile off....) that this is the main
mechanism." The Earth is shrinking because it's cooling down - the
mantle is getting sucked back into itself, and when it does, then like
putting your hand in the sinkwater, the level rises, causing an
ambient outwards flux of the mantle (which is why everything manages
to stay the same size) (to the millimetre) (The Earth that is)
(because GPS says so) (Isn't it?) (subducting slabs ensure the Earth
stays the same size) (Don't they?)

Most seismic activity is associated with the transforms, not exactly
the ridge itself. Yet even this is for a limited distance - up to the
point (not very far from the ridges) where the 'plates' lock up, i.e.
show no more 'sliding' past each other, no more 'seismic activity'
(and transforms become 'fractures').

all just one great mass, like a phalanx of front row players heading
for the touchline. So where's the plate? What plate? The ones
moving past each other? Sort of like the African plate moving past
the South American one? Or the Indian plate moving past the African
one? Or maybe the Australian plate 'moving past' the Antarctic one?
For that is what "moving past" in plate tectonics means - assigning
relative transcurrent movement (at the ridges - for it's only at the
ridges that they show any movement) to plates that are actually moving
*away* from each other. What is "moving past" supposed to mean, if
it only happens at the ridges? So, don't come the raw prawn, ...
What's the difference between divergent plate movement, and
transcurrent plate movement, when both are restricted essentially to
the ridge? Plates are supposed to move independently' - like ships
at sea, and collide and sink, push and pull, in every which direction.
What's 'plate' about anything, when everything is in fact connected
when you get just a little bit away from the ridge?

Now, draw a map of the twelve major plates, and then altogether repeat
after me, .. "Ridges are divergent plate boundaries where plates
separate, and transforms are boundaries where "plates slide past each
other" , and then put an arrow in each to show which way each plate is
moving. Then draw a cross-section, paying particular attention to
the ridges and what constitutes the thickness of the plate and the 10
centimetre-scale keyhole through which each year's worth of plate
emerges. And say why this is not a microplate.
