I have a byte-based code, which does not allow
code words to end with 0xff and sequences of (0xff,a)
where a is in excess of 144.So I'd like to know the
number of possible code words for a given length n.

This is a perfect example of why you should cross-post; i.e., post a
request to several newsgroups at the same time (separate them with
commas or spaces in your "newsgroup" field). I answered this question
in sci.math, and if you had cross-posted, you would also see the
solution here.

Aehm right, this would have been a good idea.
Btw. in sci.math thread I still try to figure out why my approach of
counting non code words does not work.
