I had 2.9" in Madison, but haven't checked any radar estimates to see how
close that was.

We've been learning in recent years that in such large local variations
in actual rainfall are reasonable. This is in addition to considerable
variation in observations as a result of the gauges and the exposure.

I agree. Rainfall statistics is one of my research interests so I'm
reasonably familiar with this, but in this particular case, with the
high winds and the tall trees upwind of my gauge (far enough upward
that they usually are not a much of a problem), I think at least a
portion of the differences in this case was due to the exposure.
However, I was in the min area of the radar rainfall pattern, too,
one max to the north and another to the south. Regards, Russell

All too often the study of data requires care.

Here in the Seattle area, we frequently get a convergence zone downwind
of the Olympic mountains to our west. Just last week, I watched as
radar showed the zone, with moderate to heavy rain, sitting ~just~ north
of my home. It looked like it should be raining, but a peak out the Mk
1 window should dry pavement. Watching the SchoolNet rainguages for
that day showed a total of 0.08" for the station near my home, but 0.95"
for a station just a couple miles farther north.
