Gladiators dump Pride, 5-4

DOELL EXTENDS POINT SCORING STREAK TO SEVEN GAMES IN THE WIN
Michael Garnett made 25 saves including 5 in the final minute to preserve
a 5-4 Gladiators victory on Saturday night against the Florence Pride at
the Florence Civic Center.
Blue Bennefield gave the Gladiators a 1-0 lead as he ripped a centering
pass from Phil Lewandowski past Florence netminder Matt Underhill at 5:12
of the first period on the power play.
Florence tied the contest on a Craig Brunel slap shot from the slot at
9:17 of the opening period. Vladimir Gusev and Kyle Kidney added the
assists on the goal.
The Gladiators took a 2-1 lead on Phil Lewandowski’s shorthanded tally at
5:01 of the second period. Lewandowski took a centering pass from Brandon
Dietrich and ripped a slap shot past Underhill. Jim Jackson also added an
assist on the goal.
Jeff Szwez ripped a shot from the slot over Garnett’s shoulder at 7:05 of
the second to tie the game at two. Nicholas Corbeil and David Bagley
added the assists on the goal.
Florence too a 3-2 lead three minutes later as Wes Goldie, wide open in
the left wing circle, ripped a slap shot past Garnett. Allan Sirois and
Vladimir Gusev added the assists on the goal.
Jim Jackson equalized the contest at three as he pulled the puck out of a
pile and ripped a shot over Underhill at 12:13 of the second period.
Steve Slonina pulled Underhill out of the Florence net and fed Chris
Durno in the slot to set up the Gladiators fourth goal of the game and
gave the Gladiators a 4-2 lead with 3:50 left in the second. Kevin Doell
also had an assist on the goal.
Nicholas Corbeil slid into an opening in the high slot and ripped a shot
past Garnett at 18:12 of the second. Jeff Szwez added an assist on the
goal.
Kevin Doell extended his point-scoring streak to 7 games as he ripped a
slap-shot past Underhill on the power play at 18:55 of the second. Cam
Brown added an assist on the goal.
The Gladiators tallied a shorthanded goal and a power play goal while
going 1 for 6 on the man advantage in the contest as they were outshot
29-26 in the win to improve to 22-9-3 on the season.
