Wow! New Rumor - CART now to lose its Mexico races!
Wow! A new rumor surfaced today that CART is now about to lose its two
Mexico races.
Apparently Forsythe is considering leaving CART all together at the
end of the season due to the Players withdrawal and his displeasure
with Pook's management of the company (remember he never wanted Pook
in the first place and has wanted him out for some time, to be
replaced by former CEO and buddy of Forsythe's, Joe Heitzler), and he
is one of the most major entities in the Mexico races and is
co-promoter of both.
Seems the other parties in the Mexico races are now balking at the
high sanctioning fees they pay (as much or more than twice as high as
any other race still paying a sanctioning fee to CART in North
America) and the fact that some races pay no sanctioning fee at all,
and they want to either renegotiate the contracts or drop the races,
perhaps to replace them with other series (ALMS was mentioned). It was
also mentioned that the other parties in those two events outside of
Forsythe are none too happy about the current financial situation with
CART and want significant guarantees that if they stay on that the
races will be run. Seems they were also not too happy about the size
of the grids and want a bigger car count guarantee as well.
Man, oh man - if CART loses those races, and the three Canadian races
because of the tobacco legislation, and then add that to now
apparently losing the two European races, CART won't be left with much
to work with, and will be looking at even heavier, more substantial
monetary losses due to losing the rather sizable Mexican sanctioning
fees.
Another little tidbit in this scene was the Corona people being VERY
upset that they were not allowed to bring a show car to a recent press
event where all the Mexican drivers went ot meet with President Fox of
Mexico. Apparently Tecate was allowed to have their show cars there,
as were Gigante and herdez, but Corona was shunned due to pressure
from Tecate. Seems that Corona is upset enough that they are
considering pulling all their funding out of Lavin's CART effort and
taking it elsewhere.
