NCAA sux vol. MMMMMMMCCCLXVII
Stanford played North Carolina Saturday in the second game
of their super-regional. UNC was up 1 game - 0. With UNC
leading 6-1 Stanford plated four runs in the bottom of the
eighth to make the game interesting. Chris Reed, Stanford's
closer came in and got the first two batters out. With a
2-1 count on the third batters, the umpires stopped the
game, declaring that there was severe weather headed toward
Chapel Hill. A quick check with the Weather Underground
revealed very, very nasty stuff headed their way. "Oh,
well," I thought, "they'll finish it Sunday."
Surprise! After a 3 hour 23 minute delay (about 10 pm east
coast time) they resumed the game. Reed promptly walked the
batter and gave up a run-scoring single. Stanford went out
meekly in the bottom of the ninth. Somewhere there is a
special hell waiting for the umpires in this game.
The Texas - Arizona State game was played almost in its
entirety during the rain delay. - Tony
