Default Nets try to buy a title with fat wallet

This is the ultimate test for owners: Will you spend so much for a
chance at a championship that you're willing to take a financial loss?
From $103 million for Jason Kidd, to the $22.5 million gamble on
Alonzo Mourning, to $5 million on Lucious Harris, a backup shooting
guard who a lot of owners would've told Rod Thorn to find cheaper on a
CBA roster. Suddenly, the Nets have a payroll pushing past $67 million
for next season, leaving ownership vulnerable to taxation under the
collective bargaining agreement.

Eventually, Martin will get his max-out money. Maybe it comes next as
a restricted free agent, maybe in two years when he's finally free to
leave. At that time, Dikembe Mutombo and his $18 million-plus salary
leaves the cap, absorbing the ache of Martin's raise. It's always
delicate with Martin. He's sensitive. He takes everything as a slight,
but then again, it feeds his fury too.

There was just no way the Nets could afford to start paying on a $90
million contract as simply an act of good faith. If Martin's agent,
Brian Dyke, didn't warn Martin of this, he did him a disservice. All
Kidd's public pleadings wouldn't get Martin an extension now, just
like his hollow endor*****ts of Scott all but assured the coach of
going into the final year of his contract.

It has been hilarious to read the reports that Kidd wants Scott to get
an extension. When asked in a news conference, what was Kidd going to
say? "No, I don't want him to get a new contract?" Come on. And
anyway, what does Kidd care how much guaranteed money the Nets owe
Scott when he's gone? Kidd has never been shy about offering his
advice on matters of front office, coaching staff, and player
personnel. Nobody ever wonders where he stands on these matters.
Nobody.

If Kidd wanted Scott extended, Kidd would've made a loud, clear, and
unsolicited endor*****t. While I don't believe Kidd ever made Scott's
employment an ultimatum - "Coach or me," - it has been clear to
everyone within the Nets that Kidd is far from an ally.

In fact, the highest praise Kidd has paid Scott has been that the Nets
have gone to the NBA Finals two straight years, so the coach "must be
doing something right." Which leaves everyone surmising that Kidd
hasn't figured out exactly what that "something" is.

He is not worth max money but because he is important to the nets
current success he feel he deserves it.
How many NBA player are are a good judge of their worth to a team or
their current market value. K mart is good but not great but he thinks
he's great so I see this getting very ugly. The nets want him but they
also need to think about the cap. They don't want to be like the knicks.
I never though i would hear myself say that. so they are going to have
to wait till DEKE is off the cap. Now between kmarts agent and his ego i
see this turning into a nightmare for the nets. This is going to get
uglier then rosie O'd ****.
