Default Lapointeless?

Sure, McCarthy is doing well but have we overlooked Lapointe?
His play so far has been just fine. Sure he's overpaid but blame
that on O'C. He IS doing what they brought him here for and doing
it well. He seems to be involved in everything that's going on. He's hitting
all the time and creating space for his teamates. He's always taking
the abuse in front of the net in order to create the screen. Remember
what a big problem that was last season when he was hurt? It's more
clear to me now why they have him with Zinovjev and Sammy. He's
absorbing alot of the punishment for them. He's not worth 5 mil but
he's not pointless either, IMO.

In fairness to MOC, it's my understanding that JJ got angry at the Wings
owner and ordered LaPointe's signing regardless of cost. Then again,
that might be yet another conoluted spin coming out of corporate America.

I give him a ton of credit for having Bergeron as a house guest. I'm
sure Marty's got a nice pad with a few spare rooms up near Andover.
Even so, if you had a wife and 3 young kids, would you want the
responsibility for looking after an 18 year old? And he seems to have
found his game, even after the knee surgery.

Plus, Marty probably lets Bergeron drive his 911s Turbo...vrooooom. I
have a feeling it motivates Bergeron to see what some hard work will
do for your annual salary.

I had heard Lapointe was trying to help Bergeron out and be somewhat of a
mentor to him. I didn't know he was letting him live with him. That's pretty
cool. I'm sure it makes things a lot easier for an 18 year kid to not have
to live on his own. Plus, Lapointe is also a French-Canadian (not sure if
his wife and kids are too), so I'm sure the fact that he can speak French is
a plus for Bergeron too. Anyhow, it's nice to see him take the kid under his
wing.

B's first goal in Montreal was a great example of Lapointe absorbing the
punishment but taking up space and the goalie's site line in front. While
occupying the Habs defenceman, Samsanov and Bergeron were allowed to walk in
front. No points for Marty on scoresheet, but makes points with teammates.

I believe later on they credited him with an assist but I don't remember him
playing the puck.
