Default Julio Cesar Chavez - Overrated?

Ah no. The jury's out on your knowledge of boxing. Wait. It just came back
with a verdict. It reads the defendant is innocent by reason of insanity.

He raises valid points. JCC's record has heaps of Mexican cab drivers on it.

But I agree that the jury is in...he is one of the all time greats @ 140lbs.
The best? Maybe not.

Rocky Lockridge
Juan LaPorte
Roger Mayweather
Meldrick Taylor
Pernell Whitaker
Ruben Castillo
Jose Luis Ramirez
Oscar De La Hoya
Hector Camacho
Tony Lopez
Greg Haugen
David Kamau
Miguel Angel Gonzalez
Johnny Duplessis

The list goes on and on. You are an idiot.

Who cares? It's not like his claim to fame is retiring undefeated.

No, he made the right call. He asked Taylor if he was all right. Taylor did not
respond to his question when he asked TWICE. There is no controversy and only
ardent Taylor fans scream foul. The truth of the matter was that people wanted
to see Chavez knocked off his high horse at any cost.

We all know that.

His best years were behind him by the time he fought Pernell Whitaker in 1993.

Actually, I think the jury is still out on whether we should commit your or
not...

I think the jury has unanimously declared Chavez a great, great
fighter.

I miss him, but I'm glad he didn't stick around like Duran did.

It does indeed.

Jesus Lara. Ramon Peraza. Fidel Navarro. Delfino Mendoza. Benny
Abarca. "Jerry Lewis" (6-3-0, I kid you not!), Manuel Vasquez. The
list goes on and on and on. Sounds more like a do***ent from the INS
than the record of the pound-for-pound greatest
featherweight/lightweight/welterweight since "Sugar" Ray Robinson. The
fact is, the majority of Chavez' opponents have been obscure Mexican
fighters. You could argue he beat the best that Mexico had to offer
but then why haven't any of these guys made a dent in the world scene?
Chavez' record was as padded as a junior high prom queen's bra.

And for those other names. The stoppage of Taylor WAS controversial
(almost everybody agrees), Haugen was washed up, coming off losses to
Camacho Sr., Vinny Paz and Pernell Whitaker, Camacho was and always
was a joke, the fight with Whitaker was a (controversial) draw and
Chavez was so badly beaten by DLH in both outings that a roomful of
Mexicans I was with, wept in agony.

It means his record could be tainted. And the guy he might have lost
to was no great shakes either. Ever heard of Miguel Ruiz? Neither have I.

Steele followed proper protocol by stopping the fight. BUT a good
referee also uses discretion. He saw the red lights go off, signaling
the end of the round. There was 4 seconds left. Steele should have
used his discretion and let the fight go on for 4 friggin' seconds. If
the ref isn't supposed to use discretion, we might as well just replace them with robots.

So that means his best years were spent fighting "Mexican cab drivers"
as one poster put it. You've just validated my argument. Chavez had
run out of gas by the time he was fighting stateside and the likes of
Whitaker, Randall and Taylor. I rest my case.

Can't we all agree that he was probably one of the best Mexican
lightweights/welterweights in recent memory, a great champion, a brave
warrior but perhaps not a pound-for-pound favorite?

Cheers,
BD

<snipped>

The difference between Chavez and a world of other pretenders is that he
cleaned out his division and rather than sit on his ass for, oh say a year, he
kept himself busy. He has always fought the best and the number one contender.

He fought often so naturally he was going to fight just about everyone, but he
had his major fights every single year. That is not padding your record.
Padding your record means fighting a bunch of stiffs to make yourself out to
have a glossy record. Chavez literally fought everybody.

Those people need to read the boxing rule books. The average fan knows nothing
of boxing or the rules. They mostly look at the punch stat at the end of the
fight and deem the winner the one who landed more punches. Silly you should
mention, "everybody"

So? Is that the only guy he faced?

A three division champion who was undefeated ( the prior loss to Haugen was
overturned because Greg was a pothead ) is a joke? And has always been? Smells
like a troll. Let's not let our personal opinions sway the truth, which is that
Camacho was a highly talented and very decorated fighter of his era.

You are missing the point that it was a fight between the two best of that
time. Pound for pound you didn't get better than that. He had a draw with the
best besides himself. Your point?

By the time he faced Oscar, he was years from his prime, and he had already
lost to Randall. But, what does it matter? Great fighters lose as well.

How is it tainted? Or are you saying that he can't be good cause a lesser
fighter beat him? Psst, I will clue you in on something. Chavez was handling
the guy very well when an accidental butt caused the stoppage. It could have
been a loss, but on a technicality such as the one that gave Roy his only loss.
We all know who actually was the better fighter.

You just said it right there. He used proper protocol. So what is the point of
going on? If you acknowledge that he made the right call, everything else
sounds like you are simply trying to discredit Chavez at all cost.

No, they were spent beating the likes of Lockride, LaPorte, Rosario, Ramirez,
Mayweather, Duplessis, Taylor, Limon and Haugen. Those were the bigger names,
but you act as if guys such as, Lonnie Smith, Terrence Alli, Dwight Pratchet,
Ruben Castillo, or Mario Martinez were nothing but cab drivers.

You are delusional.

Taylor was before Whitaker and he finally lost against Randall. Your case is
what?

The draw with Whitaker happened when he moved up to Welterweight where he not
only felt uncomfortable, but his age was already catching up with him. Despite
that he still fought the very best out there. DeLaHoya is still viewed as the
best even today! Tszyu even TODAY is STILL considered the best in his division.
And Chavez faced both of them past his prime. You are nothing but an ignorant
troll.

Hell no, the more I write the less I think of your intellect...
