Bears DE Robinson given new court date

It's unlikely defensive tackle Bryan Robinson will be sitting in a Lake
County jail when the Bears open training camp in Bourbonnais on July 24, but
the team won't be certain of his status until a few days before he's
scheduled to report.
Judge Patrick Lawler requested more information on Friday when considering a
motion to reduce the 30-day jail sentence Robinson received for his second
drunken-driving conviction in a year. A new court date has been set for July
22, just two days before the Bears report to camp.
Robinson, who also was sentenced to 360 hours of community service and 18
months probation, recently completed a 17-day stay at a suburban alcohol
treatment center.
A motion filed on his behalf Friday requests that the judge consider that
fact and either reduce the jail time or apply the 17 days to the sentence.
Jail sentences in cases such as Robinson's are typically halved for
good-time credit, meaning it's possible Robinson will not have to serve any
jail time if the judge applies his in-patient treatment to his sentence.
Robinson voluntarily entered the NFL's substance-abuse program after his
early morning arrest in Lincolnshire in October 2002. Robinson was driving
on a suspended license, the result of a DUI arrest June 23, 2002. His
license has been revoked. He takes part in counseling sessions and submits
to drug and alcohol testing as a participant in the NFL program.
The judge wants to review those results, along with reports from the alcohol
treatment center, before ruling on the motion.
