Default I am going to make a stupid suggestion to all of you.....

I'll admit stright up this has a level of naivete, but follow along
for the 3 minutes this proposal will take.

In our group we have several who will be attending the game this
Monday night. I have seen the photos of the interior seating, and
there is no doubt Soldier Field has become a VERY loud place to play.

With that in mind, I would like to tap into our frustrations. We love
our team. We HATE (I think most of us do anyways) our management and
coaching.

So, I propose the our group initite an action dedicated to our
players: our group comes up with a standard 3 syllable cheer that we
all think the 61,00 fans should cheer and MAKE IT HAPPEN.

1. We decide on the cheer: (Wel-Come Home!; Pack-Ers ****; Soul-Jer
Field!) - whatever, but let's pick one.

2. Decide when would be best to start this cheer - first posession?
First Defensive posession, when is best?

3. Finally, those in attendance swap cell phone numbers, get the
people oin their sectional area ready for said cheer, and when the
time comes the person chargesd with starting it, starts it. Those in
the other sections stay ready to listen for it, and when they hear it
start it with their neighbors.

Yes, it's naive, and yes it might not work. But with some effort it
could work, and how great would it be for our usenet group to start
something like this that those of us not in attendance will be able to
enjoy.

Our TEAM deserves a welcome home, and we should try and charge up our
players: they haen't played in Chi-Town for over 18 months....

Think of it a a civics lesson for those in the stadium, and an
interactive TV experience for those of us knowing it's going to
happen.

That's all, flame away.....

I will not be there. I will be at home in Southern California. But the
game will be on, with my new LCD projector on my new screen -- outdoors on
my patio. I will be doing my best to share some enthusiasm with a few
friends and family for this sorry team.

I will watch for your cheer, and sing along at home, no matter what.

"Bear down -- Chicago Bears!" (sung to the tune of the first line in the
song) repeated over and over and over would be my suggestion. Everybody
knows it; no team will copy it; it is the character of more than the team --
the city as well.

Packer fans would vomit.

How about "Wasn't Ratt the fag rock band last seen performing for $100 a
night at the Thirsty Whale about 10 years ago?" Not three syllables. Ah
well.

If ya get another 15 minute break from tweaking your Monza for the next
spectator drags help me out with this...

The "Thirsty Whale" in River Grove?
Man, that makes me feel old!
Used to go in there in the early 70's with fake ID's.
Now it's a gas station.
But Gene and Jude's is still rockin at 3:00 AM for hot dogs.
Probably hit it tomorow night.

You must be an old f**k like me. I remember the Thirsty Whale. How about
the Rusty Nail -- on Belmont Avenue? Wasn't there also a "Do Drop Inn" with
a stuffed Polar Bear somewhere out in Melrose Park?

I remember my first use of a fake ID was for a pitcher of dark beer at a
pizza joint on North Avenue -- it may have been a Shakey's or something.

Stash and Zosia's neighborhood tavern was also fine. Stash's MO was to ask
sternly: "You 19?" If you looked convincing in your reply -- that was
enough good enough for him.

Yeah, I know all those joints.
How about Doug Buffone old place in Schiller Park on River Road. I used
to work at SOP in Franklin Park, Bogart's in Stone Park, and Sweet
Beginnings on Fullerton in the City across from the Diplomat/Hansen
Park.
Those were the days, $35/$50 cash a night and all the booze and bitches
you could handle!
Yep, I AM an old fart!

You guys are forgetting the Come Back Inn. I still go there today with the
family. A little tamer now (friends threw a surprise 19th birthday party
for me there in 1983) but it's still a great burger and beer joint. The
neighborhood is very different these days but it still draws folks from the
entire area.

Make that 3 of us. My band played both of those places in the early 80s. The
Thirsty Whale was a nice club but the Rusty Nail was very aptly named. It was
funny to watch our manager sit at the front door and try to ply the cover
charge out of the huge, burly bikers who were regulars and didn't give a rat's
ass about the band.
