Default Why did Baker do it????

Pitch count was 129. It's a common thing among ML managers.
They seem to think pitch count is everything. We don't get to
see a lot of Cub games in my area so I can only listen. I have
no idea what Prior's motion is like. Pitchers with good fluid motions,
who end up positioned directly where they threw the ball are
generally NOT injury prone and could probably throw 150 pitches
without concern for injury ala Nolan Ryan.
Pitchers who twist up, come across their bodies, fall off the mound
in their follow thru etc are much more prone to injury and really
need to be watched. I think all managers should have an orthopedic
surgeon or someone knowledgeable watch their pitchers pitch
and then let him tell you what the concern should be rather than relying
on some popular number.

Yeah, but Dusty gets the most out of his players and promotes
good clubhouse chemistry. He isn't the smartest when it comes
to strategy but the consensus at the beginning of the season was
the change in attitude would be good for more wins than the
bad decisions would lose. If you believe that..just keep it in mind
when stuff like this happens. Personally......I don't :-) It's all
hindsight. If the bullpen hadn't pitched so poorly no one would
have questioned pulling Prior.

Young pitchers appear to be far more susceptible to injury due to overuse
than older pitchers. Nolan Ryan didn't throw 200 IP until he was 25.

Absolutely...and Nolan didn't go from 120 to 200 in one year. Point
was, most (if not all) managers seem hung up on this pitch count
thing not taking mechanics into account. I'd worry more about a 28
year old with bad mechanics pitching 120 than I would a 24 year
old with good mechanics pitching 150.

Check out the ESPN report. Prior said he was 'gassed' and couldn't have
pitched another inning. The result was a damn shame, but it's 1 game and the
decision was the right one.

I saw we get rid of Harris, O'Leary and Goodwin...and the Hernandez move was
stupid too.....let's see who has the better stats at the end of the year....my
money is on Bellhorn...

Of course mechanics matter, but even pitchers with good mechanics get hurt,
especially young ones. Prior should have been lifted after the 7th inning,
really. The problem is not so much one game as a pattern of pitching Prior and
Wood 120+ virtually every outing. Baker is playing with fire and doesn't even
know it. Today, Prior even admitted he was tired, so that makes the whole thing
a non-issue. This game was lost not because Prior was pulled or because Borowski
had a rare bad outing but because the Cubs' awful offense is getting worse by
the day. Only three runs off a pitcher who was laboring from the first inning on
is pathetic.

Thanks to all for your insight and answers in regard to my question.

I guess a pitcher would know best if he's tired or not...lol. I was
wrong in assuming (and you know what happens when one assumes...lol)
that it was Baker's idea and not Prior's.

Funny thing is, I bet if Prior had ended the 8th with 17 rather than 16 Ks,
Dusty would have let him go back out in the 9th for a shot at tying the record.
