Default Real Names

Hey all, most won't remember this but a few years ago I started a long
thread here about why I thought it was important to use our real names
on these boards.
Some, who will remain nameless, took great exception and the arguement
went on forever. Eventually one of the Ravens fans threatened one of
the other Ravens "fans" and things got out of hand. I stopped reading
this group since I have to argue with people in real time regularly
and couldn't see the point in adding to the frustration. But I stopped
by here a couple days ago to see what the latest thinking was on the
OL and LB's and was astonished to see the same people arguing in the
same way about basically nothing.

So here's my idea, when posting here use your real name. It would
remove the idiocy from the list and make people more accountable for
what they say.

I'd love to start taking this group seriously again.

Don't tell me.... you're a divorce lawyer, right ?

You gotta be kidding. I'm pretty new to this group, but in the few months
since I started visiting here regularly, I don't think anyone once brought
up current offensive linemen or linebackers. We had a few posts lately
on who was the greatest linebacker in Browns history. Does that count ?

Well, you know who precipitates that. Don't know if he was here when
you left, but he's this nut job from Baltimore who claims to have been
here for graduate work in the mid-1960's, and the experience so warped him
that he can't help but visit here regularly to remind us of that, among other
things. Were it not for him, this group would be pretty darn serious and worthwhile.

Well... I'm not against folks using their real names to make this
newsgroup more serious, but how will that foster more accountability
for what they say. For one thing, how would you enforce accountability?
Would you show up at someone's doorstep if you were offended by
something he posted ? Send him a nasty letter via snail mail ? People
will post what they post now, real name or not. The Baltimore Idiot's name
and address have been posted here. That hasn't made him any more
accountable or respectful. He keeps on disrupting.

Besides, didn't you just say you wanted to get away from frustration?
How would everyone becoming more accountable, ergo super-serious,
relieve the frustration of contentiousness? People disagree on whether
it's Couch or Holcomb, or whether Butch is the right coach, or whether
Carmen is screwing things up, for example. Are you sure you'll find the
kind of concensus here that will please you ?

Stan,

I think old "Buster" must be a Harvard man. If so, great hockey this
year, eh?

How did this get linked to the old thread?

If people used their real names the net nothings who use these boards
to collect the negative energy they so desperatly need would vanish or
just be ignored. The mistake is reinforcing their behavior by arguing
because they need the friction for some maladjusted reason. While
provoking strangers to outrage is abnormal to most people, to the
trolls it's like oxygen. And that's why they're so confusing. We
forget that they argue for no reason other than the desperate wish
that we go along with them. They know how you will respond and are
ready to twist any little bit of information you give them into
something so ridiculous you get mad, which is exactly their intention.
I think they provide some new and disturbing "need" of the collective
internet posting world to have someone, or something, to argue with
pointlessly and forever. But you can't win. They win everytime just be
acknowledging them.

Anyway, it's just an idea. There are many other Browns groups to
follow.

And I say stick with Couch. At least it works in Madden.

All the above is indeed true and has been stated before however I find
myself in agreement with what Stan has posted on the subject.

The increased interaction with trolls during the off season seems to
have become an accepted recreational distraction among usenet NFL forums
as even long term regulars do tend to feed the trolls on occasion.

I would only suggest that now that Camp is a few days away, all should
consider reducing (if they can not ignore) responses to trolls so that
when the regular season rolls around you don't have to wade through so
many useless posts.

As has been the pattern in the past, I anticipate that once the long
term regulars return to post consistently the flames should at least be
reduced or at least out numbered by enough relevant content that it
shouldn't irritate you. Hang in there dude.

Well, I can't say I disagree with you. Amazing that there's common ground
here. I apologize for going off on you many posts ago. Didn't quite realize
you were a regular dude.

WTF are your thinking? Like people really are going to post differently
because their name is on the line?

This is a classic example of acedemia. Those Ivy league schools warp their
students into a make-believe environment. I have an uncle who lived in
Ithica and was Dean of Admissions at Cornell for a number of years and this
is exactly the kind of post he'd make!

Talking sports should be fun - not something you should take personally.
There have been some very entertaining posts from Raven and Steeler fans. I
even like to hear their perspectives and trash talk. Sometimes it's funny
and sometimes they are right. Of course, they can be assholes, too...but
just roll with the punches, man. Last time I checked, football is about
helmet cracking...smash mouth...skill...power...mental
toughness....controlled violence...etc. So in the spirit of the game, it
would only be appropriate to post in the same way.

Sure, it's gonna get out of hand. But that's football baby! And if you
can't handle their "ineptness" then just put 'em in your kill file and
you'll never see their posts! Hey, I even did this to one of our own guys -
Brownstown; I much rather read Bernie posts than anything from that guy.

Just my opinion.

ROFL ! How true it is !

In the words of the late Gary Dee, Amen and Allelulia Baby !

Yeah. And may a million Baltimore Harbor Seagulls take a huge crap
on Bernie's head, all at the same time.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Balmy here is a perfect example of the strange new breed of web creep
the internet has allowed to emerge from the public restrooms they once
haunted.
Clearly he has an obsessive need for negative feedback from complete
strangers.
Like a troubled **** slicing his arm for the experience, he invites
what to others is a painful event. But to him it's pure excitement.
Why? It hit me the other day when I stumbled on Balmy's site. There,
while reading the hate mails
he displays like perverted trophies, it was all suddenly clear. Much
like the subjects in studies of children raised without much human
touch, these net creeps seek any sensation, regardless of what
receptors are activated. But why display this indignity for others to
see? I say it's because he needs an audience. Just the experience is
not enough. He seeks additional stimulus by acting out in public. But
this isn't public. Everything is anonymous and apparently quite tidy.
But is it?

There's also something ***ual in the net creep's behaviors that's
hard to miss.
He delights in approaching his subjects, mostly men, in a public
forum, entices them into outrage mostly through simple tricks of
argument and dumfounding ignorance, then dismisses them in triumph
when they behave in the expected manner, meaning they get mad.
Normally this allows him to respond in kind by being as vile and mean
spirited as they have become. Maybe that's the point, after all. Maybe
he is actually bound by social codes he only feels comfortable
breaking when his "victims" break them first.

And it isn't this particular creep. They're everywhere now. Public
incivility seems to be at a peak at present. And that's why I'm trying

People like him are deeply troubled and may not know it. Be warned,
though. He tracks every visit to his site in some inverted form of
coup counting. Just visiting his site feeds his bizarre needs. He also
evidently doesn't care if children who might happen by read the
obscenity ladden responses he has produced from the world. What a man.

Anyway, just stop playing the game. Don't answer the creep and
consider using your real name. It used to be that all a man had in the
world was his word, and now we've allowed the net to take that away
too, along with independent book stores, decent music and non-block
buster cinema. Ah, Brave New World...

A much appreciated goodwill gesture. My apology to you as well.

Bernout should love this as he just hates when Browns fans and Ravens
fans aren't at each others throats. However it was satisfying to me
simply to read a few of his interpretations of our past encounters
knowing that I and you had at a minimum, drawn him into wasting his time
on his bloated and deluded blow by blow ****ysis. If nothing else his
family had some peace while he rabidly clawed at his keyboard in posting
to those threads. You surely have noted that I do not respond to Bernout
as I know that it gets his goat more than any response could.

It is no coincidence to me that Bernout initiated his anti Cleveland -
anti Browns website only after "ratbird" posted to this NG. Just viewing
Bernout's spew you know he lacks originality and copied the idea. I
respect ratbird because his site is his idea with original content. From
what I have read here from people who visited Bernout's site, that is
not the case with his site.

Imagine Bernout being responsible for healing wounds between our rival
fan bases. A fact in our case at least which is obviously opposed to his
sworn purpose in life.
