Gammons' article on espn.com today sai Manny would consider Cleveland as a
trade destination. He also mentioned LA and ARZ.

Obviously we'd only be able to take Manny if Boston ate most of his
contract, and Boston is reportedly looking for a young corner OF, CF, and
pitching.

Assuming we could get him for under $10 mil per, what would we have to give
up for him? I'm guessing Shapiro wouldn't move anyone from the ML club
(aside from guys nobody would want, like Blake).

Crisp, Carmona and another? Crisp would fill their need in CF. If they
wanted a young corner OF, I'm not sure who we'd have that they'd want in our
system. I don't think Crisp and Carmona would get it done, though.

the rest of manny's contract is as follows:

2006 — $19 million, of which $4 million deferred
2007 — $18 million, of which $4 million deferred
2008 — $20 million, of which $4 million deferred
2009 — $20 million (team option)
2010 — $20 million (team option)

assuming that we one assume the options for 2009 & 2010 the red sox
would have to pony up $47 mil for the next five years (or more than
what we paid our entire team last season) PLUS the salaries of the
players they take in trade. if i were the red sox i'd insist in
including either sizemore (signed to an extension if possible) or
maybe cliff lee in the package plus prospects. and even that might not
be enough. and i don't think we can afford to do that.

I'd just look at a 3 year window. Is next year's OF of
Crisp/Gutierrez/Ramirez better or worse than Crisp/Sizemore/Blake? I like
option A, but only if Millwood is coming back. A trade like that (Sizemore
and prospects for Manny) opens a 3 year window, IMO. With the understanding,
of course, that we'd kick ourselves down the road for having traded Grady.
Unless, of course, we win a WS in the next couple of years.

FWIW, I just heard ESPN report that Manny listed the Indians as his second
choice, behind the Angels if he were to be traded. The Angles are probably
more willing to eat salary, making it unlikely that Manny would come to
Cleveland.

Yeah, I really can't see how this would happen unless Boston was really
desperate to unload him. The talks about trading with LA involve swapping
Manny for Vlad, which makes much more sense - although which one is the
better player is open to debate.

Boston would be crazy to take prospects alone, and Shapiro would be crazy to
give up Sizemore and/or Lee. I could see giving them prospects and Crisp to
play CF, but if they're paying most of Manny's contract, they'd have to
demand Sizemore.

AFAIK, he's listed Cleveland as a place he'd go, but nobody in Cleveland has
expressed any interest. He's a RH power hitter who can play RF, but I doubt
Shapiro's looking for 10/5 guys making among the most in the league to fill
that spot.

I'd take Vlad. Great arm, and can steal bases. He may not be the RBI machine
that Manny is, but batting in front of Ortiz, I bet he'd be good for
..320/40/120 at least. Add in the defense and speed advantage, and I can't
see why the Angels would do this, especially given the contract disparity.

My assumption would be that if the Red Sox trade with the Angels, they would
take less (remember, last year they waived him and nobody picked him up),
assuming that Moreno would take the full copntract. A trade with the
Indians, they'd have to bring back players worth at least the portion of
Manny's deal that they'd have to absorb.

I agree. The Red Sox can't trade a future HOF for Coco Crisp and prospects.
On the flip side, I can't see Shapiro parting with Sizemore or Lee, though
I'd be inclined to go for it.

My bet is that if Manny moves, it's the Angels in an underwhelming deal
(because the Sox will take less to lose the contract) that will have Indians
fans screaming.

Vlad has really let his defense go. He actually looks a lot like Ramirez in
the field these days. And he makes up for his strong arm by throwing to the
wrong base or air-mailing everyone more than anyone should. Furthermore, if
you're looking for someone who will hustle all the time, Vlad's not your
man. It's a shame, too, because he's gifted like very few players are, but
he no longer works at the game.

If I were the Angels, I'd keep Vlad, but only because he's four years
younger than Manny.

why? if manny is still producing he's a steal at 10mil/year in 2009.

i hate the idea of losing sizemore - which we all seem to agree would
have to happen to get manny. besides the fact that he's young & still
making a relatively piddling salary - we don't have a leadoff hitter
to replace him. manny can't get a lot of RBI's leading off the second
inning of every game.

i would actually rather give up hafner - while a stud, easier to
replace than sizemore - plug in garko there if he can't make the transition to 1B.

the red sox made an outlandish offer to get manny & i think should
suffer as much as possible for it. but i live in s. cal, & i'm not
sure the angels are in a position to trade for manny - they should
expect to lose washburn given how he's been quoted as having had a
great time here. they need to replace him first.

while i would love to see someone of putting up manny-type numbers in
RF, i would rather see someone other than manny do it given how much
we'd have to give up to get him back. i'd rather go for somebody like
TB's RF, 22HR's 90+ RBI's & offer some pitching prospects - the guy's
from marion. if we can throw in (& away) a broussard or ludwick even
better, make blake our 4th OF who could also play 3B & 1B in a super
sub role which could give wedge more flexibility in who his utlity
players/ backups would be.

I think it's a huge stretch to assume that Boston is going to pay for half
of Manny's contract. That's about $49 million. And there's no way they are
going to pay for half of those team options. That $20M is all on Cleveland.

i think it rather unlikely as well, but if even people here think we
can get manny for only 10 mil a year, let's play it out the whole way
& consider what it would cost us.
