Why was it racist? The talk show host was way off base by calling
Feller a "racist."

He simply stated that Latin American players did not know a lot of the
rules.

Of course it's not racist. Talk-show host Kevin Slaten is a moron.

Bullshit. A stupid comment at worst, but probably not even that. Why is it
so preposterous to suggest that Latin players don't know the rules? Omar
Vizquel grew up playing with a ball of tape for a ball. Think they enforced
the infield fly rule?

Feller was on a talk radio show in St. Louis (KFNS). He was being
interviewed, when Mike Claiborne, one the hosts, asked how MLB is
different today than in Feller's day. One thing Feller said was that
the "Caribbean" players don't know all the rules. Then, Caliborne, in
a very sarcastic tone, asked Feller which rules were those. Feller
replied, just some of the ground rules. Claiborne kept pestering him
about which rules, and Feller replied that he was going to hang up.
Caliborne then replied something to the effect of, "Go ahead and hang
up, you racist." Feller did hang up.

Claiborne was a moron and way off base. But, pretty typical of
so-called intolerant "tolerant" media.

Much ado about nothing. IMO of course.

It does sound like the host was pretty overboard on that...
I wonder if everyone knew the rules well when Feller played? I doubt it.

Seriously though Feller does strike me as a racist; that's the sort of
thing a racist would say too, although the statement itself is fairly
innocuous. Nearly everything I've read about Feller though gives me a bad
impression of him. But I doubt he's much different from most people of his
generation. Or this generation for that matter.

Larry Doby was one of his teammates in Cleveland and the first negro in the
American League.

Yeah, but what does that mean? I guess he deserves some credit for not
putting up a huge fuss about it, as far as I know.

That article in SI alluded to his animosity toward Jackie Robinson; how
first he said Robinson wouldn't succeed because he was too musclebound -
certainly could be an innocent opinion, but a racist would definitely want
Robinson to fail and come up with justifications to think that he would.
More disturbing was something about how he was upset to go into the Hall of
Fame with Robinson; maybe he had some personal dislike of Robinson, but it
all seems kind of fishy. Honestly though, he's an old man, he tunes in
to Rush Limbaugh according to the article, he's probably a racist. I don't
really think we have any reason or evidence to attack him about it though,
other than general principle.

Yeah, and a non-racist might just think that a guy wouldn't succeed. Feller
also spoke very well of Satchel Paige in the same interview.

Bullshit. The article (the writer) alluded to the irony that Feller was
inducted with Robinson, the guy that he thought wouldn't succeed. That's
all. Feller was never quoted as having said anything negative about having
gone into the Hall with Robinson. Reread the article, or work on your
reading comprehension. To interpret the way that you did, and then to post
your misguided interpretations as fact is pure drivel.
