Default We wont pick 'broken home' boys, says Dean Jones

Dean Jones and Pat Symcox are in the EPSN STAR studio with Alan
wilkins. Lunch Time show of Eng- SA. talk revolves around academies in
different cricketing countries, snippet of Marsh interview. and then
Host Alan asks Deano about the Aussie system.

He talks about talent Identification, right to the state junior levels
etc and he saidd 'we do a very careful detailed profiling. If he is
from a broken home, we usually wont pick him' .. Good Family kid will
be picked. Symcox looked slightly surprised, Alan couldnt hold himself
from asking about that again , and Jones said. yeh it might look tough
on the broken home boy but we have seen that in a good family the
parents support the kids and encourage him when he is down, but in a
broken home, it is not so and he trailed off...

Quite Amazing really. There was no talk of taking the kid if he is
good enough and offering support and trying to strengthen him mentally
etc. we wont pick him was Deano statement.

MAy be I simply heard him wrong but then, Alan asked him again, So I
could not have heard it wrong. So I hope that Dean Jones said
something quite contrary to what he meant to say, though I dont see
how..

If South Africa did not pick a player from broken homes then
Dewalt Pretorius would not be playing cricket today against
England. Pretoruis being an orphan.
I'm sure Dean Jones is not being serious.

Greetings
Albert

As I said in my post, I hope too, but if you had seen the show, u
would not be sure about that. Even when Alan asked him 'surely it is
no fault of the boy and this is severe punishment' Dean jones said
that it is tough but we feel that good home boys' parents encourage
etc.... I just hope he didnt mean to say that and just wanted to talk
about the kind of intense profiling that is done but the show didnt
convey that.

Are you sure? It sounds just like the kind of half assed management 'think'
that prevails in some quarters.

cheers

I don't know - elite sport is not an "equal opportunity employer" and there
is no affirmative action here. They pick the people they consider most
likely to succeed taking into account ALL factors.

I suspect a lot of what Deano is talking about is selection for programs in
which extensive family commitment (including financial) is required. If a
kid is from a broken home and the program requires the family to pay for
residential camps and extensive touring, then I could see that the selectors
might look at the family in some depth. The last thing they need is for an
abandoned mother to ring half way through a tour (for example) saying "I
can't afford to pay for the rest of this because my ex didn't make his child
support payment this month."

It's not fair, and it's not right, but no-one knows better than Deano how
ruthless top level sport can be. His career was ended right after an
incredibly successful tour of SL (one that MEW would happily swap with him,
for example), and we'll probably never know the full story behind that one.

Maybe there is not NSV Conspiracy. Maybe there's just
a lot more broken homes in Queensland as compared to
NSV.

We keep talking about emulating the Australian system,
but I would rather we (India) languish at the bottom
than incorporate this particular facet of the Australian
system. I suspect though, that Deano probably is
exagerating a bit.

Your problem is taking Dean Jones seriously at all.

No, I dont and wouldnt have but in this he was mentioning 'WE' a lot
and indicating that the panel of experts sit and do the intense
profiling and weed out these broken home chaps. etc....
He was clearly referring to the SYSTEM in Aus, and thats why Alan
Wilkins the host also looked surprised and asked him again , even then
Deano repeated the same thing.
