Default How much should a cue cost?

I have Tim Scruggs Sneaky Peete. Unfortunatly about 6 months ago after
missing a shot I slammed the buttom of the cue against the floor and
cracked the handle.

I feel that I have now grown up enough to buy a new cue. However,
Timmy doesn't make cues anymore that are under 800 He did however
recommend Bob Fry (sp?). I loved the sneaky peete that I had so I
want a stick that feels the same. After looking online at various
sticks, I decided I would like a stick that looks like a sneaky pete
except I would like it to have a white something at the end of the
butt, whatever the dark piece on the house cues is, I would like that
to be ebony and the rest of the handle I want to be birdseye or curly
maple. I would also like ivory joint and ferrule. What is resonable to
pay for a stick like this?

Hope I made sense.

Thanks

P.S. I called Lambross and they said it would be $1200 which I think
is way too much.

I'd build it for $650.

Here's an ebony full splice on my web site, with a few inlays.

That's a rip-off, considering that Timmy Scruggs used to make a very similar
cue for about $250. I actually got the last two SP that Scruggs made
(actually I believe another guy in his shop made them, can't remember his
name), one of them has two shafts, both have white but caps and curly rock
maple. The ferrules are phenolic, plays better IMO. They're the best sticks
I've ever owned!

You might consider calling Showcase Billiards in Westminster, (Denver), CO.
They make a really nice SP, to your specs, with their Tru-Hit shaft, and I
think it's still under $300.

The cost all depends on who is building this cue and how close to your
specs. you really want to pay for. You say a sneaky pete or look alike made
out of gaboon ebony and birdseye or curly maple. Now very many cuemakers
convert house cues or house cue blanks into sneaky petes but very few can
make a house cue. No problem getting a blank with an ebony bottom, big
problem getting a blank with a birdseye or curly prong. It has to be
specially ordered and made by a company who has the equipment to build
housecues. On top of this you want an ivory joint which adds from 100 to 300
to the cue (once again depending on the cuemaker) plus an ivory ferrule
50-150 extra.
It seems, according to the criteria that you have listed, that you have
fillet mignon tastes but are upset that it costs more than chuck roast.

A friend of mine had a Bob Frey recommended to him by Tim and bought a
sneaky from Mr. Frey. I've hit with it and it hits very nice. He
subsequently found a Scruggs Sneaky and bought it. The hit of the 2 of
them is virtually identical. It was a while ago I hit with it, but as
I recall it was a pretty stiff hit like most Scruggs are. If you liked
your Scruggs, I'd give very serious thought to replacing the Scruggs
with a Frey if I were you. From what I've heard Bob Frey may well have
made the Scruggs you have anyway while working in Tim's shop. You can
see some of his work here:
http://www.cuesnthings.com/catalog/custom/frey/. I have no idea how
uptodate that website is.

Why not send it to a cuemaker and have it repaired (since you liked it so
much)? It could be cored and glued and you'd never know it was ever broken.

I just picked up one of their 54" break cues for 175 and like it a
lot. It's really light (15.5 oz) but seems to be working for me. I
might have added an ounce by putting a "cue condom" (that's what they
called it) on it for extra grip.

A big bonus is that it jumps almost as well as their short jumper,
which I have also. I can jump a full ball from about 8" back on
simonis with it vs. about 4" with the short jump cue.
