Weanie Beanie
He owned a string of hot dog stands years ago, with the first one in Arlington,
Virgina. The hot dog trolley stands were very popular, with easy access and
good dogs. I can remember thinking the name was funny back then as a kid who
had never stepped foot in a pool room.
The notorious pool hall, Guys and Dolls, was in Seven Corners, Virginia, right
next door to Arlington. To this day, local pool folks still love telling the
stories of the games that occurred in that pool room. I think just about every
Pool Great back in the '60s and '70s era had traveled to Guys and Dolls to
experience the action. Weanie Beanie, the hot dog man, liked to frequent this
spot.
The only time I had ever seen him shoot in person was a late-night game at the
old Champions (not affiliated at all with local new Champion Billiards
franchise) on Wilson Boulevard in Arlington, many years after Guys and Dolls.
He was to play the older Boggs brother for a nickel a game. As news traveled,
most of us went over for the show. He ended up losing one set, got upset
because Boggs took too long between shots, and Weanie, if I may call him that,
demaned a shot clock. When Boggs refused, Weanie unscrewed his cue stick and
left.
