0104dnspomoore.9f5a2.html The Mavericks won't land the Big Aristotle unless they land Erick Dampier first. The free-agent center is the chip that either yields O'Neal or serves as a substitute for the real diesel. Three league executives say the Mavericks have discussed a sign-and-trade deal with Golden State for Dampier. They aren't alone. Dampier is viewed around the league as a crucial component to any potential deal for O'Neal, meaning clubs must negotiate directly with the Warriors or get them involved as a third party. Golden State general manager Chris Mullin declined to outline what he has in mind for Dampier. No one should be surprised. When Mullin interviewed Stanford's Mike Montgomery for the team's coaching vacancy, the only member of the Warriors organization who knew was the owner. Dallas is working this off-season along parallel tracks. One, every move the team makes puts it one step closer to O'Neal. And two, every move the team makes has to stand on its own. After an off-season of wheeling and dealing, the Mavericks must be able to function as a team if they are unable to trade for O'Neal. |

No thanks, talk about a guy primed for a fall after a career year.

Might as well go with a gimmick lineup if you move Shaq, that's your best
shot. In reality, if they move Shaq the movee replaces the Lakers as a title contender. -- Gary Collard SABR-L Moderator gmcollard@yahoo.com "Europeans think Americans are fat, vulgar, greedy, stupid, ambitious and ignorant and so on. Nope, I would propose the Lakers turn down a trade involving O'Neal and
Dampier, unless Dirk is also included. IOW Dampier is not even close to the caliber of player needed to be the centerpiece (pun kinda intended) of a deal. -- Gary Collard SABR-L Moderator gmcollard@yahoo.com "Europeans think Americans are fat, vulgar, greedy, stupid, ambitious and ignorant and so on. Now that the Suns signed Steve Nash, this is a harder deal to get done.
