With shaking hand and gravid fist, Mon, 28 Jul 2003 05:28:49 -0700, Brent
Wiescamp did scribe:

My hat is off to Portis if he can show up to camp 18 pounds heavier with the
same speed and burst that he demonstrated last year. Is anyone else
surprised that they asked him to come in so heavy?

You didn't think I meant the quote as a bad thing did you? I like what he's
done so far and I blame his agent for a fair amount of the contract whining.
Not that I have proof or anything.

Nope. He lost quite a bit of weight as the season went on and he only played
in 12 games. He's the stud from the start this year. I kinda sorta remember
a similar request of TD way back when.

Guess so, especially during the summer of love. For the record, I wasn't really
directly bagging on his antics although do I deplore that type of thing. I was
just using it as supportive evidence that Brent is once again not thinking
clearly if he thinks Clinton didn't have a mighty high opinion of himself and
thus his worth to the Broncos.

Wow. Way to sidestep. So because you label it PA it is PA. Nice application
of the Doc Dolphin rules to Usenet living. I guess maybe he has been
educatin' and regulatin'.

You did say that you blamed his agent for all the whining he was doing about
his contract and then proceeded to say you had no proof of that. It's not
exactly the worst thing you could be accused of but from the outside, this is
irrational thinking triggered by your love for all things Bronco. See above.

The reality is that it's the agent's job to get fair market value for his
client. Why would he be encouraging his client to do it? In fact, I'd say it
would the agent telling the client to keep his mouth shut so he won't be
labeled a malcontent and decrease his market value.

Now what would really be nice is if he had TD's attitude about being a
physical back. I remember him saying that during the first half, when a
linebacker and safety was about to make the tackle, he would try to get a
little burst of speed and ram into them as they were making the tackle,
so in the fourth quarter when they were gassed, they'd see TD romping at
them and they'd be hesitant. Bam. Plow right through the poor bastard.

Then again, maybe that wouldn't be so nice, given TD's career length.
Though if Portis won the Broncos a couple of Superbowls, *I* wouldn't
complain as long as Portis was able to lead a normal, pain-free life after
his football career was over.

I don't agree that it's purely PA to say an agent is responsible for
what a player says. I can't imagine an agent *not* pumping up a young
guy who hasn't hit his peak yet, telling him he's gonna be better than
Payton, Simpson, Brown. You think agents don't influence how players
feel about how they should be paid?
