All? Nope. I said a "fair amount" of blame.

If I had said "all" then you might have a case. I didn't.

You're succeeding in making a mountain out of a mole hill. I've been one of
the most critical of Portis' whining. The contract nonsense has been shelved
for quite some time and his quotes lately have been more like they ought to
be -- a fine line between confident and ****y. Maybe his agent deserves a
fair amount of credit for that. Not that I would have proof.

Pollyanna is a bit unsatisfied thanks to your premature pulling of the
trigger.

Why not? If a player can make himself out to the press as though he's
getting a raw deal and turn public opinion in his favor, that could
certainly help his negotiating position.

Let me set the record straight on what I think, so you can lay off the
martyr act in this thread. I think Clinton's comments about his
salary came from the people he's been working out with this summer in
Florida, not his agent. I'm just disagreeing with your claim that an
agent would never tell his client to make comments to the press.

I'll take your word for what he said. But not for a second will I
believe that it has much bearing on what he does. I'm sure that you
can ask any agent who represents NFL players about ethics and he'll
give you a similar speech about how "negotiating in the media" is out
of bounds. But when push comes to shove, an agent will use any means
available to get the best deal possible for his client. If he
doesn't, the client will replace him with someone who will.

[Skipping ahead to Steinberg quote]

Yes, I'm sure he'll lay awake a few nights wondering whether he's
"comfortable" representing that player. Then in the morning he'll
realize that he's definitely more comfortable getting 10% of the
player's salary than he would be not getting 10% of his salary, so
he'll keep representing the guy.

And just for the sake of argument, if Steinberg's conscience really
does carry the day and he drops the player after his third
drunk-driving incident, some other agent will be right there at the
police station to sign the guy. Have you ever heard of a player who
had no agent him because he couldn't find an one who was "comfortable"
representing him?

Do you just read through every post looking for ***ual innuendo? I
have to admit that sounds like a fun way to live.

This is "very, very" similar to saying there are defense attorneys who
refuse to take a case based on the "moral" issues involved ... for the most
part, it simply does not happen. Human nature is human nature ... greed is
greed ... and money is money. I am not saying there are not exceptions to
the rule, but those are few and far between.

http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~86~1626251,00.html

The article fails to capture all the humorous moments of the press
conference. Unfortunately, 9 News didn't put it up on their site. The verbal
jousts between Clinton and Rod were classic. Bottom line? Looks like at
least Clinton and Rod are having fun. From the article:

"He's just like, 'Yeah, I had more catches than you today,"' Smith said. "To
him, it's always a competition. It's always a game. That's why you always
see the little smirk on his face. He's always trying to find an angle to get
you. If you have more catches, then he's going to have a better yards per
catch."

Portis turned 22 on Sept. 1, but he's already beginning to carry himself
like a veteran.

"He's matured a lot more from last year," Smith said. "I see him out there
coaching other running backs, and I'm like, 'What are you, like 16, 17?' But
he gets that from seeing Sharpe and myself and Ed and some of the older
guys.

"He has a good feel for the offense, and he knows what he has to do."

Asked if he's on his way to becoming the Broncos' leading receiver this
season, Portis laughed.

"I wouldn't say that, but I'm going to keep on making side bets with Rod
that I'm going to have more catches than him."
