Detroit is going to be absolutely screwed in trying to deal Joseph.

I know, I know, the usual cadre of Wings nay-sayers will take this
opportunity to proclaim how 'right' they were about this (all the while
shushing talk about the innumerable proclamations of doom which have gone
unfulfilled over the last eight years), but things couldn't really be
developing any worse for Holland, et al.

Going into the year I thought these were the teams that might be landing
areas for Cujo:

Los Angeles, Boston, Philly, New York (Rangers), and maybe Calgary, although
that was a reach.

Checmanek has been typically inconsistent, but hasn't been bad enough to
warrant a second goalie move.
Potvin has been fairly spotty, but Raycroft has stepped it up enough so that
if Potvin does need to be replaced it'd be by him.
Hackett has been bad, but Esche has played exceptionally well.
Dunham has been great in New York.
Turek was horrible, but McLennan has at least plugged the hole.

Other than those clubs I don't think Joseph has a landing spot, so it now
falls on Detroit to wait until a starting goaltender gets hurt. On the
'plus' side this goaltender might be Hasek, who has seemed somewhat fragile
this season.

Things don't seem to be falling into place all that well so far, though.

I think Holland will end up riding it out the whole season with $16M
in goaltending.

Well, you can go right to hell with that kind of talk, Chris.

At what point in the year does Detroit just give up on trying to move the
guy, though? Considering Hasek only has a one year deal (and it's for 6
million, not 8), if it's February and Joseph is still in town does Holland
just say to hell with it and keep the guy? I mean, once Detroit gets to the
trade deadline what sort of urgency is there to move Cujo? They would have
already paid the lion's share of his deal, and Hasek's would be a month or
so away from being up.

I aim to please. :-)

There's that, and I think the other issue is that Hasek has to prove
he can consistently play even sort of like the old Hasek, and Holland
might be wise to wait for 30 games or so to make sure that can happen.

In the end, I think Holland will keep Cujo for the duration because
he's going to end up paying most of his salary anyway. Like you said
in your original post, who needs the guy? There are several teams
who'd love to have him for $2-3M or so, but not for $8M. So, if
Holland wants to deal him, he's going to have to pay $5-6M of Cujo's
salary, so why not just pay the whole thing and keep the guy? $77M in
salary vs. $75M or so. It's also unlikely that Cujo would bring a top
flight center in return, which is really all Detroit would be after
anyway, no?

Now, the monkey in the wrench in this whole thing is injury. If
Dunham were to get hurt...

So, Holland just sits and waits. Chris

When Larry Brooks first hinted at the comeback, he suggested Hasek was the guy
who was gonna be traded.
And that might have worked a helluvalot better — had it been done before the
seasons started.

My guess is that if the Wings keep struggling, Holland and Lewis will attempt
to use the Cujo/Hasek thing as a reason for the wings poor play, which could
lead to a contract buyout.

But you're right, if it's until Feb, might as well wait until the deadline and
hope another goalie goes down somewhere.
And then, might as well keep both of them.
