Default New thoughts on Harrington

After watching the offenses of Indy and New England last night, I have
come up with a new opinion of Joey's progress. Manning and Brady
showed that it's not just having good quality receivers to throw to,
but having played with the same receivers for a couple of years makes
all the difference in the world. Many people believe it takes three
years for a QB to develop, but with rookies (and I include Rogers
here, he only has 5 games in his career) all around him, it will take
Joey at least all this season to gel with these young players. I would
like to see everyone stay healthy this year and I think the next few
years will show a marked increase in our offense. Give all these
players a chance to gel together and see what the future brings.

The thing is, both Brady and Manning were better than Harrington at similar
points in their careers. It's true that they had better receivers than Schroeder
and Hakim and the rest of the motley crue, but that's not related to the amount
of time they had to work together. It's just a matter of skill.

Having said that, it's true that I think Harrington would be putting up better
numbers if he had more experience working with the same starting receivers.
Still, at the end of the day the Lions passing game is going to live or die on
the talent that Harrington and Rogers and the rest can bring to the game.

A talented set of QBs and WRs is capable of developing in just one preseason the
timing and coordination needed to have a top quality passing game. I don't think
that it should take more than a couple of games for the Lions to show what
they're capable of, even if they aren't up to full potential.

And let's not forget what Manning and Brady had behind them in the backfield.
For a young QB there is nothing better than having a good quality back to keep
the defenses from sending everyone against the QB. This has seemed to be the
Lions problem even when Barry was here. But at least a short drop to Barry was
a 10 yard gain. With the last batch of RB's we've had something like that still
turns into a 2 yard loss.

Watch Harrington's progress improve with the improvements of the run game.

JMBRUB says...

I think that the sigle best thing to happen to Harrington this year will be KJ,
but I also hope he learns to hold the ball for a split second longer to allow
for the play to develop and our speedy receivers to get separation. I hope
Mooch jerks his chain each and every time he fails to remember this. If he plays
smart, this team is going to surprise an awful lot of people.
