Nedved to Coyotes - May be a good thing
Now that the Nedved situation has finally been resolved, let me point
out a few things before everyone starts to bash on Lowe for not being
able to sign him.
I've followed Nedved for a long portion of his career being a Rangers
fan for a while too (yes I know, that's got to hurt). He has largely
been a very inconsistent player with tendencies to be very lazy. He
only got 46 points last year despite his heroics in the last month
with Edmonton. True he did perform very well and appeared to fit in
the 16 games he was here, but it has to be seen over the long run to
see if he can keep up the pace and not fall back to his old habits.
He went on a similar spurt like this too with the Rangers not too long
ago. Also, between 2001 and 2002 he dropped from 78 to 46 points.
Another point is that few people remember that Nedved is one of the
few players who have held out for OVER an entire season because of a
salary dispute (with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1997-98. So we don't
really know what the deal was with whether the money was enough to
make him stay in Edmonton.
But then, his motivation to leave may largely be due to his wife not
wanting to stay in Edmonton. If so, there's little the Oilers could
have done about that.
That being said, there should still be some extra money in the Oilers
vault to sign a quality center and scorer. This year's free agent
crop appears to be one of the most affordable because of the labour
dispute. Many big names are still available. And since there likely
won't be a season this year, there shouldn't be a rush yet anyway
until the new economic landscape is set out.
So in conclusion, I wouldn't worry too much about the Oilers
yet...give Lowe a chance to get someone else to help the Oilers. Next
season is a while away anyway.
