Anyone who is in the least bit interested in pop/rock/country/whatever
music should rent this DVD. It's a do***entary about the recording and
promotion of Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot", an album which they managed
to get the Warner Brothers empire to pay for, and then pay for it again.
I found it fascinating, and I'm not nearly the over-the-top fan of Wilco
some of you seem to be.

Anyone who has been in a band or who has spent any time in a recording
studio will get a kick out of several segments. Personally, I
discovered that I am Jay Bennett's (fraternal) twin brother, separated
at birth. Watching the hyper-****ytical Bennett argue with the highly-
intuitive near-genius Jeff Tweedy was eye-opening. Plus, his behavior
got Bennett fired from the band, so that was cool. Watching a
technician argue about art with an artist is painful.

Pretty much. I can play a bunch of instruments, I can help someone
shape their musical "vision", and I can dissect something that doesn't
necessarily need to be (or benefit from being) dissected, but there are
times in the studio in which somebody with real creative talent is just
clearly unable to deal with me -- and it's really not their "fault".

I was reading my Alesis QS8 reference manual tonight for the first time in
ages. I need to plug it in to my new computer and do other stuff than just
play the piano with strings all the time.

Another observation -- didn't Wilco's manager come off as one of the
most sniveling weaselesque yes-men you've ever seen? I honestly got the
feeling that he thought he was part of the creative process in some
weird way.
