The way it was explained to us at reception, the division is known as
the "Rock of the Marne" due to it being the first unit to halt the
Nazi advance in World War II. The Nazis were stopped at the Marne
River by 3ID and pushed back.. eventually all the way back to Germany,
where they eventually entered 10-3-39.

I haven't researched it.. above account may have inaccuracies in it.
