Redskins bring back Wuerffel
ASHBURN, Va., Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Quarterback Danny Wuerffel,
hoping to win a backup spot behind Patrick Ramsey, late Sunday
re-signed with the Washington Redskins.
Terms were not disclosed.
Wuerffel, who last season was reunited with former Florida
coach Steve Spurrier, will battle Rob Johnson and Gibran Hamdan for
the No. 2 spot. The former Heisman Trophy winner played seven games
for the Redskins last season, passing for a career-high 708 yards
and three touchdowns.
"This gives us a little more depth at quarterback," Spurrier
said. "He knows Patrick is our guy. He knows our system, and he
played pretty well for us at times."
During a six-year career that included stints with New
Orleans, Green Bay, and Chicago, Wuerffel has passed for 2,123 yards
and 12 scores.
Wuerrfel played for Spurrier at Florida from 1993-96,
passing for 3,625 yards and 39 touchdowns as a senior. He also led
the Rhein Fire to the 2000 World Bowl title.
To clear a roster spot, the Redskins released rookie
quarterback Brad Banks.
