Why did Eli Manning....
I'm willing to cut Archie Manning a lot of slack in this matter, as he is one
QB who would have been one of the all time greats if he had played with a
franchise who really cared about trying to build a team around him. In the
days before Free Agency, a player was pretty much stuck having to spend his
career whereever he was drafted.
On those terrible Saint teams in the 70's, it was sad to watch a great player
like Manning out there without a decent offensive line or receiving corps,
getting hammered by the defensive lines week after week. The franchise just
couldn't build anything around him because of their ineptitude at evaluating
talent, and he was unfairly labelled a loser for most of his career. He
managed to finish .500 only once in his career with the Saints (1979), and in
1978 was voted NFC player of the year despite playing with a 7-9 team.
I think if Manning had wound up in Pittsburgh instead of Terry Bradshaw, they
still would have won four Super Bowls in the 70's . He had that kind of talent
and you could see it in the films. I can understand him not wanting his son to
suffer the same misfortune he has, as the Chargers are not one of the better
run NFL franchises in recent years.
The success of Peyton Manning has demonstrated that talent runs in the Manning
family, and I think Eli has a good chance to be even better than his brother.
Archie lives vicariously thru his sons, as all fathers do, and he is looking
out for his son's best interests. Based on the way Archie was treated by the
Saint franchise during his career there, I can sympathize with him.
