Did you used to be a slicer - until taking "corrective" steps?

No, but I pushed the ball often, until I took corrective measures. Now
I seem to have a lot of hooks and slices - kind of like throwing a
slider/curveball/screwball. Although I purposefully throw those
pitches. And I can hit the ball fairly straight in an open field - with
all of its nooks and hills and valleys, but I can't seem to transfer
those strokes to the course.

You might be swinging a bit outside-in, slicing when you leave the
clubface open and hooking when you snap it closed.

Or, you could be swinging inside-out and naturally hooking the ball,
unless the clubface stays open and then you might get a push-slice.

You should probably get the advice of someone who can see what you are
doing and is more qualified than I am to give advice.

Lots of reasons, one thing that causes me to hook is my arms and hands get
too fast and outrun my hips and shoulders.

It sure sounds like the typical bandaid on a bandaid on a bandaid that
people do when they try to fix themselves. When you finally go to a
pro and show him the series of adjustments you have made he will
stiffle a laugh.

Take a lesson and get back to fundamentals before you groove one or
more horrible habits. Larry

Yeah, but what causes that?

99% of the time those and other symptoms are the result of poor
fundamentals. See a pro and get your grip right, get your setup
right, and then learn to take it back while connected to achieve a
full shoulder turn. The easiest way to learn these is a lesson or
series of lessons.

Then once you know and recognize what is correct, practice
intelligently until you groove it. When the ball doesn't go straight
and far, you will know exactly where you deviated from what you know
is right.
