Default Radical ? Advice on Starting the Downswing

If you hadn't been so much against Annika Sorenstam, I would have told you.
But since you obviosly have all the answers, go figure it out yourself....

Default Radical ? Advice on Starting the Downswing

Which is garbage.

The downswing of the arms and hands STARTS AFTER the body has fallen to the
left during the last part of the arms and hands floating to the top. They
fall down after the weight shifts to the left hip, and then they fall or are
swung down, with NO rotation of the hips or shoulders for a millisecond
(until they get somewhere near the right ribs...) at which time rotation
tightens up and takes over the whip-lash swing of the arms, at the ends of
which is the flail/golfclub.

Consciousness of and dependence on motion of the right knee and right hand
completely misunderstands the swing of Couples, Els, Nicklaus, and a host of
others who DO fall to the left, and whose BACK swings them and their clubs.
Power is in the back, not in legs pushing. You fall ONTO the left pivot
leg - you don't shove yourself leftwards. And ON that leg you rotate and
THHHHRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWW the arms.

Smith and others whose "credentials" consist in being in the public eye miss
the essence of great swings. David Lee explained this. A few people know
about it. A lot of other people who do not KNOW about it do it anyway
because of their good teachers and/or instinctively athletic
backgrounds/instincts.

THEY are the teachers who produce the Wie's, Sorrenstams, Gulbis, etc.
Howell, etc.

I am curious how long it will be before some of those going to these experts
go the way of Ian Baker Finch to "get fixed" and in the process lose what
they did have.

Then he should be your ex-teacher.

When ever I hear or read Rick Smith it seems he's preaching a new
downswing theory. As long as the game has been played and will be
played the downswing sequence is as follows;

1) The hips slide laterally towards the target. This motion shifts
your weight to the left leg and foot. The action they perform is
pulling down the right shoulder. This is the period of shoulder
acceleration.

2) As the right shoulder drops your arms start swinging increasing the
distance between your right shoulder and hands. This is the period of
hand acceleration.

3) When your hands get about even with your right leg you'll start
un****ing the left wrist often referred to as the release. This is
the period of clubhead acceleration.

You can swing your arms during or after the right shoulder drops.
Never swing them before the right shoulder drops else you're hitting
from the top and out of sequence.

How do you do this without swaying forward? I ask because I had my first
lesson in a long time yesterday and my instructor said that my biggest
problem was swaying forward on my downswing. It felt like, and I *thought*,
I was just making a weight shift but apparently I have either too much orthe
wrong kind of lateral movement. We worked on it for an hour but I can't
honestly say that I can really *feel* the difference between a swing where I
sway and a swing where I don't.

Your forward weight shift is exactly that: a "sway" forward. The top of
your spine - your head - does not move as much to the left as your hip, and
even THAT should only move enough to get ONTO the left hip, not past it.

If that is done, you are just ine as long as you move your hands DOWN BEFORE
any rotation occurs.

Could be you were letting your head and shoulders move forward too,
that would be my definition of "swaying" forward. The weight shift is
mostly accomplished with a little bump of the hips forward ... the
head stays back. Hope I'm not contradicting what your teacher is
trying to accomplish, but that's my understanding.

Maybe I am overly against Annika. However, it was described as a
stunning collapse in Golf World. Anyhow, can't you get over this - I
would be very interested in your perspective on what is probably an
important aspect of the swing, that seems to fly in the face of much
current teaching.

I'm not sure there is as much certainty about this as you believe.

For a while Faldo was encouraging getting the right hand far away from
the head very early in the downswing. These two things -Rick Smith &
Faldo suggestion, seem like they may be connected possibly. The Smith
thing does give you a srong feeling at the top of the downswing in the
few swishes i have taken thinking about this.
