Default Speaking of Women on the course....

Hello,

An incident on the course Thursday reminded me of the recent thread on
"women playing slow."

My foursome was behind a threesome of women. On the first tee, the
ladies were up at the red tees, waiting for the group ahead of them in
the fairway about 200 yards ahead of them.

The starter, a crusty old dude, apparently thought the ladies were
waiting too long and he came out of the shack and screamed "LADIES!!!
GET MOVING AND TEE OFF!!!" We kind of chuckled at how upset he
sounded and left it at that.

The ladies teed off...and then ended up waiting for more than 15
minutes on the 2nd tee. They must have thought they were behind
because they actually tried to tee off ahead of the men's group ahead
of them, who they didn't see waiting on the white tees behind them.
In fact, they had plenty of time to walk back and tell the starter to
go shit in his hat had they been so inclined.

The ladies group ahead of us was probably the fastest group in the
area. My group usually had to pause for them to hit their second
shots, but we never had to wait for them to clear the green - yet they
were the only group I ever saw get screamed at by the starter on the
first hole!

<sad, yet typical, story snipped>

I think all this comes down to slow play, period. It's not a women vs.
men thing; slow players are slow, period.

Two weeks or so ago I went out w/ a buddy of mine as a twosome. We're
not slow. We were following a twosome of women who I don't think could
hit the ball further than 150 yards; we couldn't keep up w/ them. They
got to their balls and they hit them. No talking when at the ball, no
fooling around; they were out golfing. Plenty of talking while they
moved to their next shot, but they clearly knew what they were there
for.

I played w/ another guy about 4 weeks ago who was just killing us. He'd
pull up to his ball, get out, and then proceed to tell a story while we
were all waiting for him to hit. He rarely was ready when it was his
turn; he did almost everything "wrong" when it came to making good time.

Played w/ another guy yesterday who was like a turtle. He'd hit one OB
and ask his 'prox 10-yo son, who was sitting in his cart, to toss him
another one. There'd be the inevitable miscommunication, the boy
fumbling around to find a ball, tossing it to him, he'd have to go get
it, you get the idea. (Doesn't everybody carry an extra ball in their
pocket "just in case"? Apparently not).

The guy was just slow. He'd never be ready for his shot, dithered over
club selection (he only was carrying about 9 clubs, I kid you not),
couldn't decide what to do in this situation or that situation. He
"carries" a 7.4 handicap; I couldn't see how.

So it's not a man vs. woman thing. It's a slow play thing, and slow
players, men or women, are slow.

Mike

Yesterday, I tried to get out an hour before dawn to play nine holes
at my local course.

At the tee, I see some man and his kid tee preparing to tee off, and
as I presumed they might wanted to be left alone, I stayed away, and
entered the tee when they were halfway down the fairway. Well, they
stayed at the middle of the fairway for 10 minutes while practicing
swings. They saw me, I saw them, I waved, they looked at me, and
continued to practice swings. I ended up shanking (of course) my shot,
picked up the ball and went straight to the second hole. Why couldn't
they let me play through? *Argh*
