Anyone know who the player is thatTtiger has fingered for playing a
hot driver? Perhaps one of those that let it coyly slip that they are
tour insiders might be able to enlighten us.

Nobody; because nobody is guilty.

Watching the juniors getting ready for the Gulf States PGA Junior Tour
event yesterday drove home the point to me that the young golfers are A
LOT better than they were when Woods came up. Lengthwise, Woods will
soon be facing the same "what goes around comes around" with respect to
length that players like Nick Price face now. He not only won't be the
longest or most accurate, he won't be able to get there.

A couple of the young long bombers are on the PGA Tour now, but wait 4
or 5 years! And it's not the ball or the club in this case, it's
training and talent and dedication to the game. Woods has in fact raised
the bar, and so now young players are rising to that level; Woods is not
alone in this respect anymore, and some of these kids are going to be
better power players than him...it will be interesting to see if he
keeps whining about it!

Somebody else on a different thread mentioned Eduardo Romero. This seemed
plausible to me because when I was at Olympia Fields for the US Open, Tiger
was paired with Romero in the third (Saturday) round. This was the round
when Tiger shot himself out of contention by shooting a 75. Anyway, on each
hole, Romero has outdriving Tiger by at least 30 yards and whenever Tiger
watched him Romero drive, he had this quizzical look on his face.

I dont think Tiger is whining. I think he is using his status to get the
point across, much like he did when he got the PGA to pay players for using
their image. Lots of players try to get things done but do not succeed so
Tiger is the mouth piece. I heard Nick Price complain about the latter issue
and said prior to Tigers arrival on tour they were getting nowhere. Recall
how Greg Norman got shafted by Finchem when he (Norman) proposed a world
tour? I bet if it was Tiger, Finchem would have been between a rock and a
hard place.

I have heard other players complain about the drivers, most recent of all
Robert Allenby.

I would guess it means nothing to Tiger at his level cause he has the game
to beat whatever is thrown at him. He is the man with the clout for now.

Have you ever played golf in Hawaii? I played Kapalua Plantation a
couple a years ago. Between the elevation changes on some of the holes
and the trade winds a 400 yard drive isn't all that surprising.

As an example the first hole is a 470 yard par 4 that drops about a 100
feet or so from tee to green. When I teed off there was a roughly 20 MPH
helping wind... I hit 2 iron that carried about 270 yards (that's about
50 yards longer than I normally carry a 2 iron). If I can hit a with a 2
iron that nets around 290 it wouldn't surprise me if a player of Ernie
Els caliber could smack a 400 net yard drive in those conditions.

I've been thinking all along that Els is the one that Tiger's got his sights
on. Taylor Made has arguably the best drivers on tour for the last couple
of years. Els is certainly playing some Tiger caliber golf the last couple
of years.

By all rights, regardless of driver, Els should be hitting the ball a mile,
he's a big man with a great swing.

No only the Plantation.
I really like the variety on the course.
Every hole is so completely different.
I also play the two courses at Kannapali where I stay.

Hell, I hit a 407 yard drive (and have the video tape to prove it) on
the 18th hole of the Plantation Course just 2 months ago, May 13th, to
be exact. My drive on 17 was over 370 yards and on one hole I hit my 3
wood almost 320 yards. I'm a 14 index and was playing from the white tees.

Even more telling however, was that I was not the long hitter on any of
these holes. I walked on as a single and the starter put me with 2 low
handicappers playing from the tips and who played the course regularly.
Both of them were past me on almost every hole, in some cases by 25 or
more yards. On the 18th hole the blue tees were set about 50 yards
longer than the regular/white tees, yet both of those guys were about
5-10 yards farther down the fairway the I was. (FYI, the blues were up,
normally they are about 80 yards behind the white tees.)

The amazing thing to me at the Plantation is that someone hasn't driven
the ball 500 yards yet. Under the right conditions it seems it would be
possible.

Dan, I changed my hotel last week to stay at the Royal Lahina.
I'm taking mom this time so they had a good deal on some cottage suites.
Is this where you stayed?
If so I'd appreciate any comments / tips on the property regarding food,
service, etc.....
