I just got my first graphite shaft and noticed that it's hollow on
both ends. What are you supposed to do with the butt end? Just leave
the hole there or try to cover it when taping that end?

You get a "butt end" piece of appropriate length that you
insert into the shaft, just like a blade. You can then cut
the wood end to the proper height for you without cutting
the graphite. FWIW, I found that the balance of the stick
was much better after switching to a graphite blade instead
of a wood one. They lasted much longer too - but the
balance was nicer than having a wood blade at the end of
the really light shaft.
