Old history stuff....I thought about this when Walton claimed he had never
witnessed anything like this before...
This is a description of the fight during the 1977 finals, source is "The
Pride
of Portland" by Frank Coffey and Tom Biracree
=================
The Portland fight started with Dawkins going over Gross' back for a rebound
and they both had the ball, When Gross would not turn loose, Dawkins threw
him to the floor and Bobby came up and went after Dawkins. That was when
Dawkins threw the
roundhouse, which missed Bobby and hit Doug Collins who had a hold on Gross
and was trying to pull him away. (Collins needed several stitches in his
scalp.)
Back then not only the benches cleared, but the Philly fans stormed the
court too. Luc and Ramsey were the first to Dawkins and Maurice Lucas
connected one hard punch to Dawkins head before they were separated.
It took about 20 minutes to clear the fans and players off the court with
the city police called in from outside the building to help the security.
After they were ejected (Luc and Dawkins, Gross was not) Dawkins tore the
Philly locker room to pieces. He reportedly destroyed 2 toilets, several
lockers, some dozen chairs and a metal partition. He was not only mad at Luc
but furious with his teammates whom he felt had not supported him in the
fight.
Larry O'Brian fined them $2,500 each and sent them the following telegram:
"Your conduct could have resulted in serious injury to another player and it
created a potential for a violent crowd reaction that might have led to
serious injury to innocent spectators. The type of conduct you displayed
will not be tolerated. You are hereby warned that any similar action in the
rest of the series will be dealt with even more severely."
He also sent the coaches telegrams telling them to exert their leadership to
prevent any repetition in Portland.
In Portland a public announcement before the game asked for sportsmanship.
As Lucus was being introduced he went to the Philly bench and shook hands
with the rather shocked Dawkins and the crowd responded with cheers.
As for Luc being noble he was later quoted..."It was that old 'Markette
Con'. You don't think I learned anything from Al?" (McGuire).
