Default All-Star Voting?

Is it just me, or is it insane to begin All Star voting three weeks into
the season? Tell me, who will be leading the league in batting at the
break. In RBIs. In wins or saves. Simply nuts. Then the league wonders
why the same players get voted in again and again in spite of the fact
they have down seasons, when a player can have a breakout year and have
to get picked up as a reserve, if at all?

Oh well, if this is the worst thing I have to whine about all season,
I'll be happy.

Gotta agree with you though...what are we supposed to base our decisions
on...spring training? If it was truly performance rather than a popularity
contest some of the regulars like A-Rod wouldnt even be there so far...

I was surprised by that too. Maybe they know something we don't.

In article <U2Fic.1328$FF6.711@newssvr24.news.prodigy.com>,
blueraja@knoc.rspamr.com says...

Here's the thing. It's *designed* to be a popularity contest.
Complaining that the All-Star Game doesn't properly reward performance in
that season is akin to complaining that Survivor doesn't accurately
portray what it is like to be stranded on a desert island. MLB's not
"suprised" at certain players getting in, it's by design.

I'm happier that way. Players that have truly special 3 month runs like
Loaiza last year get in anyway yet we avoid most of the stone-cold
flukes. Is anyone here *really* unhappy that we're going to be saved
from seeing that oh-so-exciting moment when Henry Blanco faces off
against Jose Mesa?
