Many of their officials like Brown, and they offered the beleaguered Weaver
for Brown. The Dodgers rejected that offer because they need offense.

However, ESPN reported last night that a three-team trade possibility has
surfaced. In this deal, the Yankees would give Weaver to the White Sox; the
White Sox would send first baseman Frank Thomas to Los Angeles, and Brown
would come to New York.

By such an arrangement, the Dodgers would save $24 million by unloading the
$30 million owed Brown ($15 million each of the next two seasons) and taking
on Thomas' $6 million; the White Sox would dispose of the troublesome Thomas
and take a flyer on Weaver to help fill the void left by Bartolo Colon; and
the Yankees would deal Weaver and get back Brown.

He can still hit - he had a line of .267/.390/.562 last season. He
has a mutual option for this and future years. Did he pick it up for
this coming year, or did the White Sox? (if he did, he would get paid
$6 million - if the White Sox, $8 million). He also can void his
contract, but I think that deadline has already passed.

Pity he can't field, though.

it's so crazy it just might work.

i'm fine with this. thomas had a quiet renaissance last year. he's a bit
risky, but so is brown, and i'll take a $6 million offensive risk over a
$30 million pitching risk. get thomas, use the brown money to sign some
real hitters or maybe make the nomar deal, green comes back from his
injury... the team might actually be good.

This now actually makes sense but how old is Thomas?

Well, McGriff could still hit when the Dodgers went out and got HIM too.
Problem was, of course, that older players tend to get injured when they play
and field everyday.

Other than that, I'm not sure exactly WHY the Sox would do this deal.
Basically, they'd get Weaver for Thomas - I think they could do better on their
own.

Yeah, Weaver will really thrive on the pressure of having to replace Colon.
Now I understand how they kept Evans hanging around for years in Chicago

Yeah good hitter but no glove, too Thomas turns 36 in May, we all saw
what happens to older players last year. I'd rather Evans waited to see
if Epstein can pull off a deal with Texas and use Brown as trade bait
for Nomar then sign an FA with the $$ saved from dealing Brown. Of
course it would hinge on the A-Rod deal going through, of course Nomar
might be PO'd enough to demand a trade. If happens it would take care of
SS and with the right FA aquisitions take care of LF and 1B for a year
or 2 without blocking Loney or Gutierrz (sp?). It'd also give the O a
boost at SS, of course it couldn't have gotten much worse.

Another trade I've heard is Brown for Weaver straight up, but with the
Yankees paying most of Weaver's salary, saving the Dodgers nearly $15
million a year so they can someone like Tejada and have money left
over for other needs.
