I'd just hate to see us settle for some second/third rate GM prospect just
because we can't get a shot at someone like Beane this season.

Let the Ownership put together a 3 person committee to make the GM decisions
until a suitable candidate can be found and brought on board....

In other words...let's not rush this. We can't afford another Kevin Malone
or Dan Evans to take the GM job and **** everything up.....or worse
yet...not do ANYTHING.

I'm sorry, anybody who compares Evans to Malone in this way has blown
much of his credibility. Evans came in with a plan - to build from
the minor leagues - and in two years has turned one of the worst minor
league systems in baseball to one of the best. I haven't liked
everything he's done (why didn't he sign Matsui?!) but don't confuse
not having time to complete his plan because of a team sale with being
a disaster like Malone was. Malone's "plan" was to build for the
present, and he did a spectacularly poor job at it, not succeeding
short term and saddling the team with huge unproductive contracts and
a stripped minor league system for the long term.

Incidentally, a fair number of ****ysts have been hinting for a while
that DePodesta has as much or more to do with the A's recent success
as Beane. Now, it's not sure that he'll be able to handle being the
front man, as opposed to being the ****ytical brains behind the front
man, but he's a better risk than most of the alternatives, if not all
of them.

Of course, I prefer high risk/high reward strategies in team building.

"not doing anything" is pretty much what's going to happen, so out of
sheer concern for your well being, and my well known interest in humanity,
I have some advise for you; It's reality. Deal with it.

I was initially thinking that the Dodgers should let evans play out
his contract, and then make a play for Beane, but the piece that Ima
posted on depodesta has made me curious enough about him to look into
his background, what people are saying about him, etc.

it would be a bold move, but he really does impress me. the only down
side is that he would almost surely clash with tracy, the ultimate old
style baseball guy. then again, that's only a downside if you happen
to be jimbo.

the more I read about him, the more I wouldn't mind hiring depodesta.
