Though I think they have the story wrong in my opinion. Why would Evans do a
Brown for Weaver one for one deal? They need bats.

As I said in another thread, the way I've heard it is that the Yankees
would be picking up a not insignificant amount of Weaver's money,
leaving the Dodgers enough room to pay for several offensive upgrades.

A. What's lefts thatıs not of third tier level quality?

B. How do you know that this is not just the burden for the McCourt group?

C. What gives you confidence Evans is the guy to make those deals happen?
His rep among GM's is not very good. If anything Andy Pettite and GS made
this trade happen more then Dan.

Vlad, Tejada, Cameron . . .

I don't. But I'm actually skeptical at this stage that that sale will go through.

Since this is the first time since he's been GM that he'll have some
actual money to play with, it's a little difficult to judge. He's
been quite good with developing the minor leagues, now let's see what
he can do with major leaguers, without having to make gambles to try
to win big.

Like with McGriff? A fairly high ceiling signing, but with risks. It
didn't work out, but that's the sort of gambles that need to be made
if there is little money to spend and the team wants to win now. Now
there is a greater opportunity to pick up somebody who is less risky,
and who has a high end that can help the Dodgers win big. See, those
types of players tend to cost money that the Dodgers owners weren't
letting Evans spend. Now he's cleared enough payroll (if the trade
goes through) to pick up somebody. Of course, he may just go for
different sorts of gambles, like JD Drew, a good hitter when healthy,
but rarely healthy.

Any GM that tries to "win big" must make gambles. Evans is putting all of
his chips on the farm system. Yes, he says he wants to put together a long
run of championship caliber seasons and the only way LA can do it is via the
farm system. He also says that at some point he will have to trade prospects
for proven big leaguers. I think that now, with the extra payroll, he can
afford to sign a big FA *and* let one of the prospects go in a trade since
he just got 2 from the Yankees any way. And being that he let Brown go they
are going to be blue chip, right? Even if they aren't great he should still
be able to loosen the apron strings and let a kid or two go.

Going after a Drew or Palmeiro shouldn't be viewed as a big accomplishment
for Evans. He should be able to get those types without breaking a sweat. I
am looking at something like Pudge + Nomar/Tejada + depth now (I think Evans
is done with 1B). Anything less and this off-season will be a major
disappointment. Especially if they sign Maddux.

But, all that aside, here is what I fear. I fear Evans is doing anything he
can to save his job including cutting payroll to help McCourt who is in
contact with him behind the scenes. In doing so he hopes to save his job
when McCourt steps in.
