Pat Borders--What does it mean?

Does the addition of Borders mean that management is not expecting
Mauer to come back this year? If not, then I can't imagine what
Borders' role would be. Gardy says he's a vteran presense (or some
such). I thought that was why they had H. Blanco.

Some things about Borders remind me of Blanco. Why have both?

It does appear that way. Or, if Mauer comes back he won't be catching, perhaps
a pinch hitter or DH.

Because their rookie back up catcher Rob Bowen is too inexperienced to rely on
in the playoffs. He simply doesn't have enough AB's in his career.

I agree, Alan. It may be a really good thing to have Borders. What I meant
was: Why have both if Mauer is coming back.

I heard Mr. Ryan talk on the radio about bringing in Borders to help
Blanco. Ole Henry needs a rest once in awhile.

Mauer is an iffy! This provides some settlement.

It's doubtful the Twins will use Mauer behind the plate the rest of the year,
Matthew LeCroy is not good defensively, so they needed a backup catcher.
Borders is it.

From listening to Hartman today, it sounds like there's virtually zero
chance of Mauer catching again this year, and only a slim hope of him
coming back as a DH/pinch hitter.

Mauer is very doubtful to return this season. Everything I've heard
and read points to Mauer not being able to play the position this
season. If he does come back, it'll only be as a DH or pinch hitter.

Blanco has been a real surprise, and asset, this season, and LeCroy
has been adequate, yet very underwhelming, at the position. The
Twins need a little more assurance than that going into the final
stretch and into the playoffs. Borders gives them that. Sure, he's
41 years old and no real prize, but he does have that veteran
experience (with some decent playoff experience) so he should
do just fine as the Twins #2 catcher.

I was glad to hear about the Borders signing...almost as happy
as I was to hear that they finally brought Kubel up and that he
will be eligible for postseason play if things work out. The kid can
hit.

Which really ****s. I'm starting to wonder if Mauer will be
able to come back from his injury and return to 100%. Those
problems with the meniscus have ended some catchers careers.

I read a while back (not sure where) some speculation on the
possibility of him not catching any more. The opinion seemed to be
that he's got too much raw talent for it to be career ending. He'd
likely be taught another position on the field.

I wonder how he'd be at second base?
