how many points did he get last year?

How could our best player be overrated?

He isn`t over-rated.. but what fans expect of him is a different story. He
needs a line-mate, who he can help be a "franchise player". He just isn't
the type of player who can carry the team himself, by himself. But he can be
a member of a line that could.

Take away last year and that number per year goes WAY down!
He has always been full of promise, and thats the way his career will
end. Full of promise, not much to show for it.

If you forget last Season (as per Jason the other anti-Koivu poster's
suggestion) and the one before that (his year off fighting cancer) and look
at his first 6 seasons, Koivu had 270 points in 344 games (.7848 points per
game). If you look at his whole NHL career he has 343 points in 429 games
(.7995 ppg) If you look at last season he had 71 points in 82 games (.8658
ppg)

So the guy has decent career ppg and is still improving. I can't think of
any one who has had a better ppg on the Habs over that time. He is a great
leader and captain that is liked and respected by his team mates and peers
(obviously that group does not include you and Jason

Using the salary data I have from the from the start of last season (I can't
find this years data yet - anyone know where to find it?), Koivu's $3.3M
salary last season ranked in 4th on the Habs (behind Theo's $5M, Brisebois's
$4M and Hackett's $3.6M) and 96th in the NHL (at a level with such notables
as Brian Savage's $3.25M, Boris Mironov's $3.3M Jeff O'Neill's $3.3M, Shawn
McEachern's $3.35M). Based on comparisons with players on his team and in
the league as a whole, Koivu is not overpaid and perhaps even under paid.

Note that in comparing ppg to other Habs over Koivu's career, I did not
include Recchi and Damphousse since they did not play in Montreal for the
last four seasons. FYI over the same years of Koiuv's career here are their
numbers. Recchi had 517 points in 548 games (.9434 ppg - $5M last season).
Damphousse had 518 points in 606 games (.8547 ppg - $5.75M last season).

Koivu has had a history of missing games with injuries although that seems
to be improving along with his ppg. I do not however think that a players
injury history factors into the question of them being over-rated or not,
therefore, based on Koivu's performance and his compensation, I have to say
no, he is not over-rated.

It's not that he is rated high, it's that the expectations upon him are
high. I don't think anyone, outside of Habs fans, thinks he is one of the
leagues elite players. But he's probably the best we have. He's at best, a
30 goal scorer and 80 point man. But he's got balls, you gotta give him
that.

Oh come on that depends on how you value him. He was often referred to in
this group as our superstar...he is not and that is what makes him
over-rated.
He is a star and he may well be our best player but that is a sad commentary
on the organisation and not a value statement on Koivu. There is a huge
difference between Marc Recchi who we got rid of in order to keep Koivu and
Koivu himself. By your own stats about .20 ppg which is 20 extra points a
season. Personally I prefer a stat that includes the missed games as when
he is not there. Add the games that Koivu has missed and the ones that
Recchi and others have missed and we come up with a relevant stat that
indicates his contribution to this team.
This guy impressed me last year and I retracted gratefully all I said about
his lack of heart. I was wrong but don't expect me to offer praise where it
is not due.
He doesn't **** and he is a fine 2nd line centre when healthy. I have often
said I would trade him ; the simple reason that we cant count on a guy who
spends so much time out of the line-up. If we stop counting on him and get
ourselves a star hockey player that is a genuine game breaker... well Koivu
is a nice jack in the hole
I am not sure what his new contract is paying him but I suspect it is more
than 3.3 million. He has lost too many games to injury and we have lost too
many opportunities and too many solid players in order to keep him.
He has served as an inspiration and does deserve accolades for his fight
against cancer and his determination to play hockey and if he didn't have a
succession of GMs and coaches trying to make him the primary target, he
might have had a solid career.
We wont get into my comparison to him and O'Neil but yeah you win big time
on Savage.
I don't know if the "Little Brittle Finn" days are back again or not it is
too soon to tell if last year was the exception or the new rule. He hasn't
missed that many games yet but if he comes back long enough to take the
confidence away from the kids he replaces and then goes down again... then
my constant knock on him is valid.

I thought moving Recchi was a salary dump, why are you blaming his departure
on Koivu? Recchi is indeed a better performer than Koivu, that is why he is
and has been paid considerably more (and why like Damphousse he was moved in
a salary dump). I am not saying I agree with them trading those players to
dump salaries, only that that was the reason I understood that they were
traded.
