If you forget last Season (as per Jason the other anti-Koivu poster's
suggestion) and the one before that (his year off fighting cancer) and look
at his first 6 seasons, Koivu had 270 points in 344 games (.7848 points per
game). If you look at his whole NHL career he has 343 points in 429 games
(.7995 ppg) If you look at last season he had 71 points in 82 games (.8658
ppg)
So the guy has decent career ppg and is still improving. I can't think of
any one who has had a better ppg on the Habs over that time. He is a great
leader and captain that is liked and respected by his team mates and peers
(obviously that group does not include you and Jason
Using the salary data I have from the from the start of last season (I can't
find this years data yet - anyone know where to find it?), Koivu's $3.3M
salary last season ranked in 4th on the Habs (behind Theo's $5M, Brisebois's
$4M and Hackett's $3.6M) and 96th in the NHL (at a level with such notables
as Brian Savage's $3.25M, Boris Mironov's $3.3M Jeff O'Neill's $3.3M, Shawn
McEachern's $3.35M). Based on comparisons with players on his team and in
the league as a whole, Koivu is not overpaid and perhaps even under paid.
Note that in comparing ppg to other Habs over Koivu's career, I did not
include Recchi and Damphousse since they did not play in Montreal for the
last four seasons. FYI over the same years of Koiuv's career here are their
numbers. Recchi had 517 points in 548 games (.9434 ppg - $5M last season).
Damphousse had 518 points in 606 games (.8547 ppg - $5.75M last season).
Koivu has had a history of missing games with injuries although that seems
to be improving along with his ppg. I do not however think that a players
injury history factors into the question of them being over-rated or not,
therefore, based on Koivu's performance and his compensation, I have to say
no, he is not over-rated.
