Default Draft needs for the 2004 draft

Since we all seem to be in a speculative mood, how about guessing
what the Patriots needs will be in the 2004 draft. Before jumping
in and saying RB, RB, and WR, consider last year at this time.
Nobody, but nobody would have predicted that we would have gone
into the 2003 draft as NT as the top need, by far.

Here are my guesses:

Inside LB
Left Offensive Tackle
NT
Free Safety
RB

1) CB (Ty Law is likely bye-bye. You can always use a quality CB.)

2) RB (unless Smith performs or Faulk does and he's signed)

3) ILB (but only if he's really, really good - else, free agent)

4) DL (quality depth to continue replacing older players)

Only CB can definitely be predicted now. It's way too early to get a handle
on this.

RB(come on, neither Smith nor Faulk are the long term answer... we should
welcome the newest member of the Patriots... Cedric Benson)

CB(I could see us using a first round pick... depending on how Wilson, Myers,
Poole work out... if they do, maybe taking a second or third).

Outside of that, it's a crapshoot for depth... if there's a stud OL I could see
us taking one early.

RB- Although I hope Womack surprises us. Some guys to watch: Steven Jackson-
Oregon St., Greg Jones- FSU, Brandon Miree- Pittsburgh, Michael Turner-
Northern Illinois.

LT-Light would be a better LG or RT. Guys to watch. Robert Gallery- Iowa,
Shawn Andrews- Alabama, Tony Pape- Michigan.

ILB-TJ is getting old, he's average at best already. Bruschi is better
outside. Guys to watch: Richard Seigler- Oregon St., Rod Davis- Southern
Miss, Lance Mitchell- Oklahoma, Courtney Watson- Notre Dame.

FS-Milloy might be a cap cut next year, and Harrison is a better SS anyways.
Guys to watch: Stuart Schweigert- Purdue, Brandon Everage- Oklahoma, Sean
Taylor- Miami.

CB-Law could be a cap cut, and you can always use talented CBs anyways. Guys
to watch: Marlin Jackson- Michigan, Chris Gamble- Ohio St., Nathan Vasher-
Texas, Derrick Strait- Oklahoma.

What if the best player available in each round is a TE?

The whole BPA argument is silly. Of course if a team sees a pro bowl potential
player at RB, and they already have a decent RB, they should still draft that
rookie RB rather than take a mediocore LT which they might need.

But it doesn't work like that. Players are graded, and usually if there is a
RB with a 7.8 grade there is also probably a LT with a pretty similar grade and
to ignore the team need is silly.
