ESPN kills off TMQ :(
I couldn't agree more. I though Rush was a moron for his comments on ESPN,
and after reading BOTH Easterbrook's original article and the "apology", he
too is an idiot. The thing that was offensive was that he talks about a
"historical" basis for his slur - he says...
"But accusing a Christian of adoring money above all else does not engage
any history of ugly stereotypes. Accuse a Jewish person of this and you
invoke a thousand years of stereotypes about that which Jews have specific
historical reasons to fear."
I'd love to hear more on this one - so in his "apology", he appears to be
justifying the slur through some vague reference to "historical reasons" for
it being accurate? Why not cite the Scots? They are reputed to be
notorious tightwads. Or how about the ethnic Chinese - also alleged
money-grubbers by other asian cultures, since it was the Chinese to set up
the largest networks of banks throughout Asia. I still don't understand
what singling out Jews had to do with his argument. Why not Muslims, who
consider it criminal usery to take interest from fellow Muslims, but
consider it Allah-directed-duty to try and fleece Khafirs.
I grant everyone the right to say what they please - in fact, as Madison
says in Federalist #10, we should invite open discourse. It's always best
to know what the lunatic fringe is thinking and who they are, so that you
can first try to argue with them reasonably. And should their ideas become
truly insidious, at least you have been forewarned and can prepare a
I won's miss either Rush or Easterbrook commenting on football.
