Default Pats trade for NT Ted Washington!

No, I'm not kidding. I just hope he has some gas left in the tank. I can't
imagine BB waiving the conditioning test for a player, but I can't imagine
Big Ted passing it either.

I don't like this trade. The guy is washed up, and for not much improvement
over what they already have, they gave up a draft choice which, by this
years' standard, they could probably have done a lot with.

I think there was a little bit of panic here. They should have waited until
some of the training camp cuts were made.

But he is far larger than anything they already have. That is the most
important thing. He won't penetrate, but he's not going to get blown back
either.

Huh? It was a 4th rounder. They had 2 1s, 2 2s and either 2 or 3 4s ( I can't
remember which). There's no way they could use that many picks. Sure, the 4
they traded could have been used to move up a spot or 2 in the 2nd or 3rd round
to get a player they really want. So they lose a little bit of flexibilty on
draft day, but they still have a ton. The main point being: they were never
going to use all of those draft picks, and giving up one of the 4s is like
giving away nothing.

From what I heard, they had 3- and traded away the one they got
from the Redskins?

If he stays healthy, the Pats will allegedly sign Washington to a
contract extension- which Chicago wouldn't guarantee.

- Norm...you know I love you brother...BUT GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR
TUCHAS...this was a great trade. They give up a fourth round pick that
they received from Washington (a team btw that was desperate to land
Washington but did not have a 4th rounder to trade for him and was
unwilling to give up a third) and they get argueably the best 3-4 NT in
the game. this is not some minor upgrade this is huge. They got a guy
who is by all accounts healthy and hungry. He is a monster...atleast
375 pounds and he passed Chicagos conditioning test. They do not want
him to play 70 plays a game...just 30-40...obvious running
plays...occupy the center and a guard and allow Colvin and Brushi to
move all over the field without getting chipped by a lineman. This is a
great, great move by BB and Scott Pioli and it cost them virtually nothing.

Bingo. Assuming he's healthy, he's an improvement over what they have even
taking into consideration his best years are behind him. Assuming he's not
healthy and has to sit out, the Pats are still in the same boat they were in
two days ago. The cap hit doesn't look monstrous (feel free to correct me
on that if I'm way off base), so the Pats are clearly improved their
situation.

Chris

Except that you alluded to an important point. Washington's 4th (the one we
gave up) is probably gonna be a mid to low round choice. That would have a
lot of value to package with one of the 1st or 2nds' to make a significant
jump forward. Given the value that BB & Pioli have demonstrated they can
glean from the draft, it sounds like a high price. The only thing the trade
did was give us Washington for one year, but we gave up potential talent for
years to come.

Last time we met, Kent Thaler <kmthaler@aol.com> had said:

I could be mistaken, but I believe , when he was healthy, he only
played 30-40 plays a game in Chicago.

I like this trade a ton though. The Pats need a run-stopping NT; they
currently don't have anyone at all that can even just be adequate.
Washington will at least do that. And even if he only plays sparingly
as a run stopper, he'll be worth it. Easily worth a 4th round pick
and the small cap hit.

The geographical center of Boston is in Roxbury. Due north of the
center we find the South End. This is not to be confused with South
Boston which lies directly east from the South End. North of the South
End is East Boston and southwest of East Boston is the North End.
