Valentine tells Cashman Franco spiked Benitez?
Ah. So you're saying Valentine provided Bush with additional input that
was radically different from the truth, and assisted in furthering that
version (pronouns slightly modified from Ollie North quote).
Seriously, though, it seems as though it's pretty hard to be a manager
of a ball club without the occasional professional white lie. How, for
example, could Joe Torre have waffled on the Clemens question without
doing so? You can see it as simply wrong, or as a necessary evil, or
even as simply justifiable behavior and not, under the cir***stances,
wrong.
I guess the question I was asking was, since Valentine is not managing
a baseball team, is there any reason to think he's lying? I mean, since
Franco has got to be feeling threatened by just about any relief
pitcher on the Mets at this point, if he _did_ do to Benitez what
Valentine seems to be claiming, could he still be doing it? Stress on
the "if"; I'm not accusing him of anything.
But it would ****, if, after having gotten rid of some _major_
clubhouse cancers in the past year, we overlooked a big one because
he's such a nice guy ;-).
