Hmmm...Manny Ramirez put on irrevocable waivers. See:

Wow indeed. So if someone does grab Manny, how does Boston expect to
replace him in the lineup?

By using his $20-million salary to sign Bartolo Colon and/or Kevin Millwood.

No one is going to pick him up.

Plus pay Todd Walker's salary, if they want him back - and probably
have money left over.

Didn't know either of them could hit or play the outfield.

Exactly. They could improve in several areas, while still boasting an
above-average offense without Manny.

It is a risk, of course - getting rid of a great player always is.

The Tigers get first crack at him. I doubt if they'd take him, but
they really should, as the quickest way to improve their talent base.

I think it's a trap being set for the only guy who might consider picking
him up. While George would love nothing more than to show everyone that he
can afford what his competitor can't, taking Ramirez off the BoSox' hands
would actually allow his competitor to spend that $20 million to address
several positions of need.

Outside of George, who likes to demonstrate his ability to afford what his
competitors can't, I can't imagine anyone else biting for what is,
essentially, full price. Instead, I would expect Ramirez to clear waivers
(unless George jumps at him), with Boston then moving him in a deal in which
they either pay some freight and/or take back some financial garbage in
return. The Hampton deal provides a model of how large commitments are
laundered these days.
