Default Zim goes to Mets

The Mets should give serious consideration to offering Don Zimmer a spot on
the Coaching Crew. At lest there he'd get more respect from the owners, &
wouldn't have to worry about fisticuffs.
Think of the respectability it wuld bring to their club.

Please tell me you're kidding. Things are worse than I though if the Mets road
to respect is Don Zimmer.

Isn't Zimmer an ex-Met? Be that as it may, he might get more respect
from the owners, but I think as long as he initiates fisticuffs, he's
going to have to worry about them. His recent problems were entirely
his own fault. Maybe the stress levels would be lower on the Mets (and
some would argue that's part of the Mets' problem), but I could see him
going after whassisname, that LA reliever.

As for respectability, he lost that for me when he got involved in the
Clemens-Piazza mess. It's one thing to unabashedly say, "My team, right
or wrong," and leave it at that, but he deliberately fanned the flames,
and he did so at a time when it would have made Torre and Steinbrenner
look bad to have done so. So he's not only a gratuitous troublemaker
and headline-grabber (and a liar) but also a second-string, substitute,
gratuitous trouble-maker and headline-grabber. And that's something I'd
like to think the Mets don't need.

And is bench coach really our biggest problem right now?

Their first third baseman. Started a tradition.

Screw Zim. The man was never a great player, and a terrible manager. He got
lucky enough to ride on the coattails of Torre's great teams, and only through
those victories did he manage to sc**** up any respect amongst baseball fans
and aficionados.

By himself Zim is what is always was, a bitter old man with a big mouth. (Not
that that excuses Stienbrenner's behavior...)

WHAT "respectability"??

Who CARES about Zimmer? We need young, aggressive coaches to work with the
young players. Zimmer is a dinasaour

Yeah we tried that.... 1962. He was awful. Guess you're too young to
remember?

He wasn't a coach in 1962 ... he was the thirdbaseman! Or perhaps you are
too young to remember?

I think this is all academic...Zimmer lives in Florida, where he can drive
25 mph in the left lane. His buddy, Lou Piniella, is probably going to
offer him a position with Tampa Bay. It's ideal for both of them. Zimmer
can keep busy, and Tampa Bay can employ him for $5.15 an hour...
